When i upgraded to the Note 9 , i was using the upgrade on another phone on my account. I was trying to avoid having the line that i took the upgrade from deactivated because we don't stay in the same house and all he has is a cell phone for me to contact him. I was told by AT&T that once i got the new phone all i had to do was not use the new sims card that came with the note and that i could just take the sims card from my s8 and put it in the note.I did this and the phone is working fine under my number, but i'm not getting any security or software updates and the sims card numbers don't match on my att account. Since i didn't activate the phone the traditional AT&t way could that be the reason i'm not getting the security updates?

Re: September Software Update on AT&T

I’ve swapped a LOT of phones on att and have never had that issue. In my experience, as long as it’s an att phone with an att sim that’s all it took to get the updates through att. You could go by an att corporate store and get a new sim just in case. Unless something has changed they will do that for free.

I was going to do a chat and see if they could switch the the sims numbers in the phone before I went to att or Best buy. I used to switch out Sims cards alot as well and I've never had this issue before.

Re: September Software Update on AT&T

I went from an ATT iPhone to ATT Note 9 and they needed the IMEI.

Simple things though with ATT C.S. take forever to do.

Re: September Software Update on AT&T

So att is going to send me a new sims card programmed to my number. If that doesn't work then I'll go to the Samsung rep in Best buy.

Ah ok that can definitely explain why you're not getting updates. Yeah a new SIM can work especially if you've been using the same SIM for a long time. Also, make sure the new IMEI is registered to your account that way it gets provisioned properly. I would think AT&T did this though when you spoke to them over the phone. I do this a lot with our business account where we just use another line as an upgrade but just put a different sim in when we receive the device.

I had the same thing happen to me once. The cause was that IMEI number in their database did not match that my phone. Before then, I switched SIM cards between two phones a couple times. ATT told me that this sometime causes their system to get locked on the wrong IMEI number. I had to call ATT twice to get it fixed. The second rep knew exactly how to fix it. The first rep had no idea.

My experience is that ATT will be able to fix something like this better than Best Buy, but that is just my experience.

I was only going to Best buy because Samsung told me to take the phone to the Samsung service center to get the security update loaded there. Both Best buy and att customer service sucks so I was honestly trying to avoid dealing with either one. Lol

ATT tried and failed to get their remote software to even download and install.
Plus I dont like even having it.
They had to do the same thing with iPhone X and had no problem.

Doing that troubleshooting over the phone is not something I ever want to do.

I agree! I've had bad experiences with both. Best of luck getting this fixed!

It's not going to matter. Do you use wifi any? Usually most if my updates trigger when I acquire a wifi connection or on reboot.

I'm on wifi everyday. I didn't get Aug or Sept security patch. That should have happened by now.

Some carriers limit the download to WiFi but not the notification that an update is available.

Exactly, AT&T requires an AT&T SIM and service on their devices to trigger the update. I'm still thinking the IMEI is not updated on her account.

Well I just had att change the imei numbers. She said after 15 minutes of my phone being off I should start getting the updates. I doubt that , but let's see what happens.

So I just made a blank trip to Best buy and an att store. The Best buy I went to no longer has Samsung reps and att can't do anything for me in the store. Samsung said I could go to any Best buy making it seem as if all of them have the Samsung service centers. I'm going to try to call att and hope they don't frustrate me further.

Now that your IMEI is updated go into settings - apps go on the top right corner and choose show system apps. Scroll down until you find software update. You'll see two of them. Go into each one and force stop, go into storage and clear cache and data. Once you do that for both restart your device and check for updates.
