Serendipity VII

I've been messing with it all day. So far so good (still the usual suspects as far as 2.3 issues go though).

Another good ROM by MM & CM but, like all of the other I9000 GB ROMs, it's more buggy than it's Froyo counterpart(s).

i just put it on. haven't found any bugs yet. most stable gb rom i've been on so far!

lol, ok, got one for you guys.

when I plug my phone into the computer it just charges. How do I get it to "ask on connection". So that I may transfer files back and forth?

edit: under wireless setting/usb settings, it is set on mass storage, however when i plug it in, nothing.

How is this compared to CM7 (and foyo-based Serendipity)? I know you have to flash the gingerbread bootloader, and I'm considering it. I was on CM7, but I flashed back to Serendipity 6.4 because the battery life was better and there were still some bugs in CM7. Also, where is the thread for flashing a gingerbread bootloader (and flashing back to a froyo bootloader)? I know there was a thread, but I can't seem to find it now.
Thanks

I just went through the same thing.

went from firefly to cm7. couldn't get it to work just right so i went to serendipity 6.4. stayed on it for a bit and just flashed serendipity 7 yesterday. I have absolutely no problems with it. everything works as it should except for the problem i stated above. which i finally got to work.

its way more stable then cm7. and flashing was a peice of cake. just follow the directions WORD FOR WORD on the serendiptiy7 website.

I'm thinking simple here, but did you make sure "USB Debugging" is selected? The only time I've ever selected "ask on connection" was when I was stock.

It may have changed, but the idea I understand is that custom ROMs should always run with "USB Debugging" selected...I'm fuzzy on it- it may have just been mentioned because it's easier, not because it's absolutely necessary for the ROM to run right.

The bootloaders are a big deal if something goes wrong during the moment they're flashing, but they aren't as difficult as they might seem.

Every time you use, or have ever used, Odin One Click to return to stock you're flashing bootloaders- every time.

As was mentioned, just read, follow the instructions on the S7 site and do not deviate from those instructions and it will go smooth as buttah.

Love it so far. The only issues I've had are some wonky wireless (3G, Edge, GSM) while I'm in my office, but otherwise, it looks and runs great.

yeah, debugging was off. I just unplugged it and replugged it about five times and it started working. *shrug*

is there a problem with the instructions on the website with odining if i have three button problems? Just don't want to brick my phone.

The main problems with GB & Odin in the past have been that some people used the "Odin with three button fix" to go back to stock. It only has one of the two necessary bootladers so it will hard brick your phone if you use it after a GB install.

The Odin provided with the Serendipity ROM is just fine for installing GB and isn't intended to help you return to stock- just make sure that when/if you go back to stock, that you use "Odin one click" and not "Odin with three button fix".

so if I have had to use the three button fix in the past, I can use the regular one click Odin and everything would be OK?

It's important that you and I are on the same page as you could potentially brick your device so feel free to keep asking questions and researching before digging in.

What you used in the past is unimportant as you'll be overwriting all of that. It's when/if you go BACK to 2.2 or 2.1 that which Odin you use to flash back to stock becomes extremely important.

3 button fix to return to stock before GB install = ok

3 button fix to return to stock after GB install = BIG fat no-no

I hope this helps.

With that said, I'm not sure what you mean, but I will add this:

Sorry if I was confusing. What I was trying to say was that when have flashed back to stock in the past, I have had to use the one with the three button fix because apparently it would soft-brick my phone otherwise. I know that it doesn't matter now what I've used in the past. My question is: if I flash to Serendipity VII, and I eventually decide to flash back to stock to use ROMs that require a froyo-based bootloader, will using the normal one-click odin (the one without the three button fix) soft-brick my phone like it normally would? Or would it work?
Thanks, and again, sorry if I was confusing

No worries man. Some people can be impatient with this...me, not so much. :)

Look back up at my last post real quick- I edited it.

One last thing (and THANK YOU for all your help!!!)
Let's say I do all of this (go to Serendipity VII and back to stock.) After that, do I need to use 3 button fix to go back to stock from a Froyo based ROM? Or did it fix the three button problem?

It will not brick you. Soft-brick is a bit of a misnomer. A real soft-brick that can't be fixed with 3 button can be recovered with a $10 jig (less if you make one at home).

Hard bricking should be your main concern because very few people outside of Samsung can fix a hard brick (search "jtag"). Hard bricking can occur if something goes wrong during the few seconds that the new GB bootloaders are DL-ing to your device. Power failure/USB unplugs/etc during that exact, brief, moment. any other failure in the install can be recovered from, just not a failure during the bootladers install portion.
