Set up new Pixel, AT&T says I require a new SIM

I received my Pixel today and used the SIM from my AT&T iPhone 6 and the phone seems to work fine. After a debacle with iMessage I swapped the SIM back and forth between the iPhone and Pixel a few times and and received a text message from AT&T stating: "Your new device requires a new SIM card to give you access to all services. Please visit your local AT&T store to get a new SIM."

Does this need to be done? What am I missing if I don't do this?

Well, my Pixel XL runs at AT& T, when it arrived I just took the Nano Sim Card out of my Samsung Galaxy S6 and put it in my Pixel XL . No problems at all. Maybe another owner of a Google Pixel running it at AT& T may show up at your thread with some clarification. Your other choice is a visit to an official AT& T store and try to solve this out. I hope that they don't charge you for the new Nano Sim Card. Good luck with this.

I had no issues just swapping sims, though I didn't swap bak and forth several times. Just disable iMessage before you start in the future.

This automated message is sent out for those that need new sim to support advanced services like HD Voice(VoLTE). It was usually triggered if you put a sim in a newer phone that supported these services when your sim does not. I'm not saying that this is your issue. Just a typical situation. Sim swaps are free so it wouldn't hurt.
