I know this is a stupid question but am I simply connecting my phone to the computer to do this or do I do it all on the phone.

How do people actually brick their phones?

Odin runs on a Windows computer and you connect the phone to the computer. There are guides over on the XDA forums that can walk you through it. I learned how to do it all on my own and so can you.

Since the last Verizon update on the 21st, fortunately the problem has not resurfaced. Not clear if the update, or an app update has made the difference.

that update had no bearing on software issues, it was strictly security updates.
