When I go into my windows 8.1 laptop file explorer, I can see my network attached storage (NAS) device as well as other windows laptops on my network.

But I can't see my android kitkat cell phone in file explorer as part of my local area network on my laptop? Vice versa, I can see my (NAS) on my android phone using es file explorer but not my laptop.

And I can't see my android phone on my smart tv either through dnla but I can my laptop.

Is there a way to get my android phone sharing files through my home private local area network (but not on public networks when I log in at coffee shops)? Also, can it see my laptop too somehow on all my apps that can see network attached devices? I'm primarily interested in media files but all files would be nice too if possible.

Thanks.

If you run ES File Explorer it will connect to the LAN and you should see the NAS. It should also show your laptop.

As for seeing the phone from thee laptop's Network Locations, no. There's probably a way of doing it (I never checked, since there are so many other ways of transferring files from the phone to and from the laptop), but the phone won't show up by default.
