Should I buy the Nexus 5x?

Right now I'm debating between the Nexus 5x 32GB, which I can get for $300, the OnePlus 2 64GB, which is $350, and the Nexus 6P 64GB, which I COULD get used for $450 and new is $500. I own a HTC One M8 now, and I really want stock android. I'm leaning towards the Nexus 5x right now, just because its cheaper and runs completely stock android, and I'd like the NFC capabilities. I know the 6P is better than the 5X, but I think it might be a bit big, but I have heard that you get used to the size. I'm just not sure which one is worth the money and a major upgrade from what I've got now. By the way my phone does not run Marshmallow, its still on Lollipop. Thanks!

Welcome back! I don't think you can go wrong with the 5X, considering that you're interested in stock Android. Golfdriver97, our Ambassador Team Leader, has one, and thinks it's excellent. I have a 6P, which is terrific as well. It is on the larger side, obviously, but it's just a little longer than the Note5, and almost exactly the same width. If you've ever handled a Note 4 or 5, and you didn't think they were ridiculously gargantuan, you'll be fine with a 6P.

I just got my Nexus 5x and for me it's very much a Nexus 5 with a slightly larger screen and a fingerprint scanner. In use, it feels very, very familiar. For Mr. Stubby Fingers, the slightly larger screen means a more useable keyboard.

I have a 6P which I'm very happy with. At the current prices though, I'd likely grab the 32GB 5X through Project Fi for $249. It's a great deal, even if you have no interest in keeping Project Fi (just have to pay the $30 for the first month -- much of which will be refunded when you cancel).

Don't get the 5x.

I've had it for a month and it's been a PITA. It's obviously not a top-shelf device. Someone stated that you really need x2 the RAM in this device to have Android 6 function well and it bears out in my experience, and another stated that they think LG crippled it to avoid impacting sales of their own flagship. I really like some aspects, like the size and lightness and the rear fingerprint sensor, but the performance is simply dire. I find I do not use it as often as I would if I felt I could "trust" it.

Also, battery life is poor and the only way to get it to charge quickly is to use the included USB type-C charger (which is 3 amps!, unlike our average .7-1.2a one). You can get a Type-A to Type-C cable as well but then you are just sacrificing charging speed for convenience, and this one loves to bleed battery life.

If you're used to better — look elsewhere. I know I'll be moving on once the iPhone 7 is out.

Having said all that the 6P may be your cup o' tea but I've no experience with that one yet.

Nonsense. Android 6 runs fine. I wish that nitwit "someone" would get it straight at least once.

I was leery of the USB-C but I rather like it now. I have to replace cables and get rid of the USB micro but that would have come some day anyway. At least they don't have a connector that used only by LG.

I'm still not sold on fast charging. In an emergency, fine, but I prefer charging while I sleep and speed isn't a problem. When I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I'm old, I unplug the charger.

So, whether you spend your money on a 5x or not is your decision and not mine and not Kreig's. Read the reviews, there are a lot of them. Decide whether the pros outweigh the cons for you. And make your decision. I'm glad I got a Nexus 5x. Apple isn't something I consider.

While I can understand why fast charging doesn't matter to you, I don't understand why you aren't "sold on" it. It isn't going to harm the phone to be left on the charger overnight, particularly since the more charge the phone has the slower it charges. The fast charging seems to be very well designed to minimize heat, which is what damages the battery.

I'll also agree that you don't need lots of RAM to run Android M, it appears to even run fine on 1GB of RAM (such as the Moto E). Even the original Nexus 5 runs fine on Android M, despite having hardware that is 2 and a half years old.

Honestly the main thing I'm concerned with is the lag and slowdowns I've been reading about. There's even an article on this website saying everyone on the android central staff has experienced this issue; here's the link: Nexus 5X, three months on | Android Central. Have you guys been seeing that? Other negatives don't really concern me, except the 32GB limit on the phone, but I can get past that.

Got it 15 days back. No lag and is awesome. I don't play games but have 5 mail accounts, fb, WhatsApp, Viber and hangouts and the battery life is just awesome. One and half day of battery life consistently for me.

My understanding is that most of the lag has been fixed by Android updates, though of course this doesn't have the power of the 6P and will "lag" if you push the processor hard (such as some graphics heavy games). With it currently available for $199/249 through Project Fi, it seems well worth trying out as it will outperform anything in that price range.

The issue of lag and/or slowdowns has kept me from getting a 5X too. Its kind of weird, because obviously lots of users aren't having problems, but this forum, and reddit, are full of complaints about 5X lag (actually, the 6P also gets quite a few reports too). I realize people tend to come here to report issues, but these reports seem way more prevalent in the Nexus forums than say Samsung or Apple. Not sure what to make of it, but it has certainly given me second thoughts about buying one, no matter the price..

I've had the nexus 5x for a few weeks with April update installed. No problems at all with the device.

I old and possibly irrational but I avoid things that generate heat for my electronic devices if I can. I enjoyed the convenience of "topping off" my cell phone with a wireless charging device but it generated noticeable heat.

So, I carry my "fast charger" with me in case I run short and have an old plug next to my bed. When I wake up at night--I'm an old guy--I pick up the phone and it's never warm.

To be honest, when I get the proper cables and adapters to use my "power pack" to recharge my Nexus 5x when I run short I probably will put my "fast charger" in a desk drawer.

I've had my Nexus 5x for a week now. The transition from my Nexus 5 was painless. I've had no problem with "lagging". So far, I'm happy. Note: I have only 51 apps total and play no games on the Nexus 5x. I've watched a couple of news video clips and they work fine.

I got past the 32GB limit by using Cloud Services, especially OneDrive with an Office 365 subscription.
