I've been using Handcent SMS on my phone and have been having problems receiving texts lately. People would send me texts, but I would not receive them at all until the next day when I would suddenly receive an entire day's worth of texts that people tried to send me.

I realized that when I installed Handcent, I did not disable the default Messaging app. Should I go into App Manager and disable Messaging? Would that help?

i dont know about Handcent, i use Go Sms and found out the hard way that if i disable the Messaging app, i dont recieve any txts lol.
for a week i thought noone loved me :(
maybe Handcent is different.
test it, get someone to txt you (dont text yourself because for some reason that still works)

p.s, it sounds more like a carrier problem youre having but atleast disable notifications from stock Messaging..

You don't have to disable messaging. Just play around with the receive settings I guess or maybe you have bad service? Idk man. Handcent works perfectly for me

Just go into settings and set handcent as your default messaging app

I used to use physical buttons, and then I found button savior

Yeah, I set Handcent as my default app and disabled notifications from the Messaing app. I tried disabling the Messaging app, and so far, I havent noticed any problems with Handcent. I can receive and send text and picture messages without problem.
