Should I do factory reset before the MM update

On my At&t Note 5 since my battery life is really bad? (I do not have the update yet just want to be preppared)

Welcome to Android Central! I wouldn't jump to a factory reset automatically. Try doing the update, then wiping the system cache partition: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-23240

And the norm would be, if the system cache partition wipe does not work, you would do the full factory reset only after you've done the software update.

Be sure to back up all of your important data, photos documents etc.

Not needed. Your data remains safe after Marshmallow official OTA update. Battery life just got better after this update. so sit back relaxed and wait for your update.
