If all I currently use it for is the visual voicemail? I don't give that number out to anyone and I will port my current number over to FI.

And I'm not clear as to how voicemail works on FI. I don't use hangouts for texting/messaging. Is that where the voicemails will be?

I just received my invitation and am stuck on the "Keep Your Google Voice number" option. I guess I will keep it for now and then port my number over when I receive my SIM and new phone.

Thanks!

I would imagine your VM will be through whatever carrier your FI account is assigned to.

The voicemails are part of the phone app in Fi. They use the same visual voicemail engine as GV, I believe, but the results are in Fi. On your computer if you log in to Fi, you can also click on Google Voice, and see the same voicemails using the old GV voicemail interface you currently use. In fact, if you're using it for VM right now, you'll see all your old voicemails there too.

The account is assigned to Google and the phone auto-switches between carriers; it doesn't get assigned to either of the carriers that Fi uses.

So where are the voicemail message? Do they go to Hangouts? Do I need to start using that? I did just get my FI sim card and am awaiting my Nexus 6P.

No, the voicemail is available through your phone app on the phone (it's just another tab in the phone app and shows you both visual voicemail and the ability to play it) and in the backend the voicemail is stored in the same way as Google Voice voicemail is stored, which is why you can access it through a desktop browser using the GV interface.

Awesome! Thank you! My phone should be here tomorrow, so I'll get to play with it all weekend before shutting off my other service.

yeah I made sure Fi was working for a few days and then I cut off my service to VZW. did not want to be stuck without anything

The porting of my GV number is not going well, so I've finally asked them to port my AT&T number. I seem to only be able to make calls for a day on my GV number before it deactivates and they have to reset it. Data is coming thru, just having problems making calls.
