Should I root now if Froyo is coming out soon?

I just got the Epic 4g and am thinking about rooting it to get access to some features and remove some bloatware. I'm a novice with this stuff, so sorry in advance if this is a stupid question: should I root the phone now with the Froyo update supposedly around the corner?

My concern is if I root the phone now, it may
a. negatively affect the Froyo update and
b. require a re-rooting of the phone after the official Froyo update is released.

I know there is a method to install Froyo now post-root, but my understanding is that it is a beta version or something like that, so I would rather not risk my phone.

If I were you I'd root now and get some practice messing around with these tools so you're ready when the Froyo root comes out :) You will have to re-root for Froyo but it's not a big deal. And if you're worried about your phone never being the same again, check out this thread - it's a method to wipe your phone clean back to stock. You can use this when Froyo comes out to easily update from stock too.

You could wait for a 2.2 rooted rom to come out. you don't necessarily have to wait for someone to find a root exploit for 2.2 on touchwiz.

Thank you to all who replied! I think I will do some more research on what the 2.2 rooted rom will be, and if it will offer me the things I want. Namely, I'm looking to change the launcher, gain wireless tethering access, and maybe gain access to some rooted-only applications.

If that is the case, you can always use any launcher you want regardless of rooting. If you rooted, you will have access to wireless tethering and any other root required apps. You do not need to flash a new ROM for that.

I am rooted with the one-click method on the other forum. I also happed to flash a new kernal, rom and theme and my Epic is now overly fast, good battery life and no problems that I can't live with. I was on the fence about going back to the EVO, but now that I have the ability to change ROMs on the fly (even though not too many are available yet...give it time).

My point is this, you can root and then later choose to reflash ROMs, but rooting alone will be fine for your requests.

The only thing that will effect froyo is if you remove certain core apps that will break the phones ability to update. Rooting does nothing to effect the phones capabilities, but like all hacks/mods should only be done if there is a need.

what "other forum" did you use for rooting instructions? I just want to be able to tether this thing without paying 30 bucks a month! What is "one click" method also?

Here's one method for you. Pretty easy to run.

One click root for the Epic 4G! v2.2.4 Now has Busybox & remount scripts! - xda-developers

I will tell you that wifi tethering is still hit or miss. Some people get it work on their epics some don't. Android wifi tether seems to work for me okay. My ipod touch can connect to it, but my laptop has trouble.

There is a droid 2.2 out where need it for my epic so can get flash 10.1 to see videos and stuff from my college classes
