Just asking for opinions. Never rooted a phone before but I have someone who has rooted every phone she's ever had and loves it. Thanks in advance..

I would only root if there are things you know you want to do that require you to root and you know what you are doing. There is always a risk of bricking your phone if you root. So you need to read a lot of forums and figure out on your own if you want to root or not. Go to xda-developers forums and read everything you can on the phone.

Like mentioned above, do you need anything that requires root? Any specific apps?
There are a few very easy methods to follow for rooting, and if your friend helps I'm sure you'd have no problem doing it.

After reading the responses I have a noobie question.
What types of things can you do once rooted that you can't do with a stock Note 3.
I have read quite a few posts that state what root is best or better than others but I guess I miss the basic reason to do it....
Thanks!

The reason I rooted is I wanted control over certain things on my phone. I use Xposed modules to change the way my phone behaves and looks. I also use titanium backup to save my apps in case I need to factory reset my phone. You could also install other ROM to change up your phone. Root just gives you control over your phone. I compare it to buying a computer from the store and not having admin privileges. You can't do anything with that computer even though you paid for it. All you can do is use it as-is which is bull.
