I have the HTC One X and my contract doesn't expire for another year. I hate that AT&T won't release a software update and I've heard that rooting and installing new software is awesome. But I've never done it before, is it worth it? and how hard is it? I don't want to break it and than not have a phone.

if youre going to do it, do A LOT of research on how to do it, if you brick your phone (delete something you shouldnt have) your phone is pretty much useless.

rooting your phone you install new software and updates and a lot of customization from what I know.

yeah its worth it, its not hard you just have to know what youre doing.

Rooting is totally worth it. At least for me it is. Yes there are always some chances of brick. So be aware of that. If you decide to, here is my guide. I can guide through it step by step if you have any questions and will answer any questions you have.

IMO no not really worth it, I've rooted and flashed several ROMs on my past devices, first of all, think of why you want to root it:

- if there's an app on the Play store that requires root, I used Volume+ on my last device (LG Optimus LTE) because the call volume was too low and it required root which was easy to do on that device. And I also had a screenshot app which of course needed root.
- a ROM that meets your preference, 4.1.1 for me does everything I need including making fonts larger, which wasn't possible before ICS.

Rooting the One X is no cake walk, my Asus tablet isn't easy to root either and I lost it after an OTA update and can't root anymore.

Rooting the one x is actually very easy, but I agree as well with basically everything you said.
