Should I send it back or keep it?

The touch-screen on my Droid X started locking-up when I was playing a backgammon game or browsing the internet. After several hard resets, I called Verizon and they said it was a known issue and they would send me a new replacement. In the meantime, I stopped using the backgammon game and for the most part the problem disappeared. Now I am thinking it was a software issue and I can live without backgammon.

The new replacement came earlier today and they charged my account $300 for it. They told me they would remove the charge when I return the original phone. Last year I dropped my LG 8300 in the toilet and called Verizon for a replacement. After drying out the original phone for a couple of days, it continued to work (it still works). So I kept the replacement as a spare and just paid the charges they added to my bill.

My wife and I went in a Verizon store today and looked at the Droid 2. She liked it, but my account is not eligible for another early upgrade until January. Since I am within my 30 day return period, it occurred to me I could activate the new one, then exchange it for a Droid 2 for the $35 restocking fee.

Paying $300 to keep a phone I no longer think is broken seems like a heck of a deal if Verizon would let me do it. Does anyone think they will let me?

I doubt it, seems like you'd be getting a little something for nothing in their eyes. I'm surprised that they only charged your account 300 for their latest and greatest.

Just to clarify, your going to return the replacement Droid X. Pay the $300 to keep the original Droid X and then use your NE2 to get your wife a Droid 2?

If your going to return the phone, they might hang you up over the fact that you are returning a phone with a different ESN. Same issue BestBuy/Apple gave iPhone 4 owners that had gotten theirs swapped out because of issues.

scorch, I have not had a problem with the original Droid X since I stopped using the backgammon game, so there is probably nothing wrong with it. If there is nothing wrong with the first phone, it doesn't matter which one I return.

I don't even know if I am going to try to do it. I am just intrigued by the possibility.

Even if I could do it, I don't know if I would be able to pay an $860 bill. I paid cash for the accessories and taxes, and expected to get the $100 rebate before I had to pay the bill. Right now my account should show $300 for the first Droid X, plus $300 for the new one and $200 for my monthly bill. (I have 4 phones on my account.) I have not looked at the details online yet, but it is about $60 higher than I expected.

If you don't think you can afford it don't do it. Is it really worth it to have a spare in a few months anyways when your wife will end up with a D2, D2 WE, or D Pro? The cheaper method would be to get the Assurian insurance, at max over two years it would be $244 including the cost of the deductible.

I say if you have no quarrels about the cost, then return one of the X's and see if they will reinstate your NE2 for the Droid 2. Activate other X and pay the $300. Your original $300 should drop off. You just got a 600 dollar phone for 300 bucks and no contract. I suppose its kinda sneaky, and I guess they will eventually close the loophole by temp billing you the full price of the phone in the future.
