Should I upgrade from a V30?

Folks,

I have a V30 that I love. I was wondering if it made sense to upgrade to the coming V30S ThinQ? I'm already thinking probably not, and more so probably not for those of you who have the V30+. So what do you all think?

I've had my V30 since launch. It's been perfect from day 1.im not changing for a couple of years. And I use to be an annual buyer.

In my personal opinion, I would say it is not a justifiable upgrade. The V30 is stellar. If you had a V10 or even a V20 (though those are good too), then I'd say the upgrade would be more justifiable.

For sure! I'm loving my V30!

If you're a die hard fan, why not. But honestly, no, there's no big upgrade worthy of upgrading to. This is like the S8 and S9, minimal changes.

Same here. Still using the V20... About almost 1.5 years by now. I want to keep my devices longer... it's a pain to buy cases and install screen protectors... and then install everything again.

I think I'm going to hold out for the ThinQ, rather than jumping onto anything else at this point. So hopefully it comes sooner rather than later. I tend to keep phones for awhile. The 6/128 GB for me is future-proofing, as I'm not sure what exactly I'll do with it all as I'm not a gamer or watch tons of movies. But to each his own, right? I'd take a OP5t, but I'm with Verizon...

The S9 seems to have significant camera improvements over the S8. It can record in 4k 60fps also. Having the wide angle camera to me is still more important so I'm sticking with LG. But the thinQ does not make sense to upgrade to from a regular V30 since the launch V30 is getting its software updates anyway. So in the end what do you get? More colors and storage? I have a 256gb MicroSD which to me works great with a phone that already comes with 64gb on board.

The V30s thinQ doesn't have the 3G CDMA radios Verizon uses and talking with B&H Photo, doesn't seem like Verizon will activate the V30s thinQ on their network. I have a V20 and was looking to upgrade to a unlocked V30s thinQ, but doesn't sound good being on Verizon.

Verizon actually has certified the V30S ThinQ on their network. Details here: https://opendevelopment.verizonwireless.com/device-showcase/device/7542

As long as it's the US998R model, it should work on Verizon. According to that document, the V30S ThinQ has the 3G CDMA radios

What's also interesting is that Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact and HTC U12 Plus are also certified by Verizon, according to that site... those don't have the 3G CDMA, but have all their LTE, which is all I ask for these GSM phones now...

Thanks for the info! When I called B&H initially, they told me that it wouldn't work on Verizon. I saw your post today, called B&H and they said that the V30S thinQ should work good on Verizon. It's currently on sale for $679, so I pulled the plug and got it. Hopefully they are right and it works well. I have a month to send it back if it doesn't. The flat Moroccan blue color looks awesome. Can't wait to get it!

Please report back once you get it saying whether it does or not. I'll be interested on whether Verizon will activate it or not. I'm in a quasi holding pattern now. I've got a G7 coming for my wife and I was going to hold out a few more months to see what becomes of a V40, if any. Can't bring myself to switch to any other carrier at the moment, honestly.

Got the V30S yesterday from B&H. Swapped out the sim card and the phone worked great with Verizon. I don't have the Verizon voicemail app and no Wi-Fi calling, but other than that everything works just fine. Don't have all the Verizon bloat and all the bloat apps that Verizon adds to the phone. Very fast and fluid phone. I can really tell the speed difference coming from the V20. The screen is very nice to look at, and it is nice to have wireless charging once again. I will miss the removable batteries on the V20, too bad they are a thing of the past. Battery has lasted all day with lots of use. Seems to be quite good and efficient on battery usage.
Still trying to get everything set up the way I like it, but it is a nice upgrade from the V30, minus the convenience of the removable battery. I wish I had a voicemail app that showed me how many voicemails I have and a better way to go in and delete old ones other than listening to each one and then deleting them. If anyone has a good voicemail app from the play store that they like, let me know. Matt.

Edit: Nice upgrade from the V20, not V30

Nice! Was thinking the same. I can live without WiFi calling, not a problem... but the visual voice-mail thing is a pain not having. However, I've lived through not having it before. As a work around, I've a Google Voice number I use with Telegram so I'll get an instant notice if someone called. So the only question that remains is whether OS updates or patches will ever come and should I go with the matte or glossy blue?? Fingerprints? I think I know the answer for updates already. Thanks.

I got the matte blue and it looks cool to me. The sides of the phone are gloosy and the back is matte. When the light hits the matte in certain angles, it gives it a really cool look. You also don't get all the fingerprints all over the back with the matte blue. I would suggest a case, it's very slippery to hold being all glass, but feels great in the hand.
As far as voicemail goes, I am getting a text message from Verizon when I get a voicemail in my inbox. I forgot about Google voice. I'll have to see if I can get that to work with my Verizon number as well.
It sure is a great phone and the B&H price for $679 is tuff to beat.
