Should I upgrade?

I have a Droid 1, and would really love the incredible. My only fear is that the incredible hd or whatever it is called may be right around the corner. Opinions?

I went from a Moto Droid to the Incredible. Functionally, not a huge difference, imho. though I love the form factor.

I'll be getting the new HTC when it's available, or in April - my annual upgrade date.

I guess I'd say stick it out and wait. OR, do what I did when I went from a storm to an Incredible. Sell the Droid (should be able to sell it for at least 100-150) then buy am incredible for under 300 (at least that's what Craigslist has them for here in Phoenix) Then you still have your upgrage/renewal/ne2 or whatever when the Inc HD (or whatever name) comes out

Yea, I think I'll just sit tight for the announcement on Jan. 6th then. I'd regret it if I didn't lol.

Yeah, Waiting until Jan 6th is nothing. It's the waiting 'till april or whenever that'll make the decision tougher

i'd been holding out myself but my phone sounds like **** as does my wifes. (Samung Omnia & LG something) I got 2 incredibles for $49.95. Ordered yesterday and delivered today with free shipping. A good deal if you ask me. I figure I have the 30 days if my ideal phone (Merge) comes out. I must say, after opening the box, it might be hard to give it up.

IMO if the HD is anything like the evolution, there will not be any 4g on aosp rom's..that's a dealbreaker for me

I don't get how it would affect 4g, wouldn't it get and receive signal the same? Unless the radio coding doesn't match up. Idk, I just really want sense. However, I may be spoiled my MIUI.
One quick question, with sense, does a bar appear at the top above your pull down when in a call, but at your home screen? Just curious.

Yeah, if you wait for the new one you will be paying alot more. You can get an Incredible right now for free at Best Buy. The new HTC will be at least $200 and I have yet to hear whether or not you will still get unlimited data with it (are you forced to use 4G or can you still use your unlimited 3G plan?)....

Wait for the HD. The DI is a nice phone (pre-ordered it so I had it the day befor release, paying full retail and have no regrets) BUT it it is an aging handset. It will be 9 or 10 months old by the time the HD comes out.

The thing is, I don't really see how the Mecha/Incredible HD/Thunderbolt will be much of an upgrade over the Dinc. Yes, it will have LTE and a front-facing camera (which will rarely be used, it's just another marketing gimmick until they become standard), but other than that, it will probably have very similar, if not identical, specs (other than a bigger screen). I'm not even sure it'll come with Gingerbread (although it probably will have the new Sense).

And LTE probably won't make much of a difference unless you're tethering. So you have to really think about whether or not the wait is worth it.

And the Incredible is a fairly old phone, but oddly enough, the technology hasn't changed much since it came out. I wouldn't say any of the smartphones out there are significantly better than the Dinc in any aspect. And even the Droid 2 Global, which has a better processor, has Motoblur seriously slowing it down (and a locked bootloader).

You make a lot of solid points here but you are ignoring one HUGE one, Application memory. The DInc is severely limited in that capacity. To give you an idea the Desire Z rom that the third party devs have been cannibalizing the new Sense from is over 500 mb in size. Phil and Jerry were debating in the podcast a few months ago as to weather the DInc and Evo were even going to get the new Sense at all (We now pretty much know they will but it may be a scaled down form, as third party devs have managed to port it to both phones). The DInc only has 748mb. And your third party apps are getting bigger and bigger as they are improved.

Processor wise you are absolutely right, but I also think you are underestimating the importance of a front facing camera. With LTE coming and the abundance of apps that are starting to support video chat in their android Clients, within 6 months every high end Android phone worth it's salt will have a front facing camera.

Dont get me wrong I love my DInc, but it is a rapidyl aging handset because of the memory issue.

Do apps actually go in the "phone memory?" Couldn't the "internal phone storage" be used (especially since apps can be kept on the SD card...).

It depends on what phone you have, the DInc has two different partitions one for storage and one for OS and apps. The Fascinate has them all in one. And no you can't move them to internal phone storage and you an only move them to the SD card if the app developer allows you to (must be coded into the app), and a good amount of apps out there still don't have that ability either because the app developer is too lazy to recode it OR, as is the case a good amount of the time, the app developer chooses not to do so because they believe it will cause performance issues for the app.

They get so much money from us as it is. I am paying retail for my Incredible because I wasn't upgradable. But there weren't any refurbs available. They gave me a month free on data. I wasn't happy with the BB, too many issues and too many replacements. Normally I would had just waited, but the frustration got the best of me. I am not happy about the price I am paying but I really love this device so I intend on using it for a very long time.
I can honestly say if this is the device you like, you won't regret it. I don't know how the new pricing will be and I have the unlimited and am glad I do. I don't like the tier plans and if you go over, you are charged for it. It is best to have unlimited and I hope they don't take it away.

You don't have to worry about loosing your unlimited data. Verizon has chosen to implement tiered data AND leave the unlimited data one in place (take THAT AT&T!) for 3G.

Most have speculated that this will change with 4G but I personally believe they will leave an unlimited option for 4G, it will just be higher than the current 3G unlimited.

Even if they did get rid of it, as long as you kept renewing your contract and kept a handset that was capable (and didn't voluntarily change to a different data plan), you would be able to keep your unlimited 3g data. I am grandparented into a truly unlimited data card plan which hasn't been available for about two years and they have never tried to get me to change even when I upgraded to a different data card and then eventually a MiFi. This last fall the contract on that line was extended for another two years.

I don't know if things change in different areas but at the verizons in my community and the surrounding area we fall on the grandfather clause, regardless of if it's 3G or 4G, as long we signed up for our plan with unlimited data it will not change. Besides that, haven't you read up on the forums? Verizon is still offereing unlimited data, it just offers 2 lower priced limited data selections as well now.

I agree with almost everything you say here except 2 points, First point is that I am fairly optimistic and almost certain that if/when a new version of the inc comes out it will most definitely be carrying a faster processor and probably more ram, they would not release a phone with a larger screen if it could not handle a better resolution either, these are obvious opinions though, but lots of research and info online points it it being pretty accurate. Second Point, LTE will most definitely be worth it, things like the GPS navigator will be much smoother and find you way more accurately much faster (without all the battery use). Also, Isn't 4G supposed to allow web browsing while in a phone call? If so than that will be very helpful in quite a few situations.

Yes, but remember it will be quite a while before the entire country is completely LTE with no need to fall back to 3G/EVDO, so you will loss that functionality when you drop to 3G. But yes LTE will be quite worth it when it actually happens.

I completely agree with your other points about hardware. Just because it looks like the Evo/Desire HD does not mean it will have the same internals, a significant upgrade (even fit isn't the processor) is a virtual certainty.
