Should I use a different Google account on a tablet?

Hi folks,

Because the New Nexus 7 is certifiably awesome, I've seriously been considering making this my first tablet purchase. If I do decide to take the plunge and purchase this tablet, is there any reason to consider using a different Google accounts for my Android phone and tablet? More specifically, when I enter my Google account into the tablet setup, will all the apps I've downloaded onto my phone suddenly appear on my tablet? If so, should I consider setting up a separate, tablet-only Google account so that I keep apps for the two devices associated with different Google accounts?

I would use the same account, for the simple reason that you can use all of your paid apps on both devices at the same time. You don't have to install all apps on both devices if you don't want to.

I use the same two Google accounts across all of my devices. All of my purchases are on one (for the reasons that Kevin described) and the other Google account only brings contacts, calendar and e-mail with it.

Uninstalling from one will not affect the other automatically and once you are set up, installing on one will not automatically install on the other.

When jerethi signs into the tablet with the existing account on the phone, it will begin installing the apps that are tied to that account in the play store unless the choice is made not to sync app data when the tablet is set up.

It can be a bit of a shock when setting up a new device with the same account. Suddenly you are flooded with the download of 100 or so apps from the play store unless you choose not to sync app data.

No, it will ask you if you want to download them all. Just say no and later add what you want.

Hi folks! Original poster here. I thought I had fully resolved this question, but now that I have actually receive a New Nexus 7 (yeah!) and am on the verge of setting it up, I'm back with another question.

First, I have recently been considering factory resetting my phone. It's my understanding that, if I do this, when I setup my Google account on that phone again, Google can restore all my app data, wifi settings, etc. on that device. Now, if I use the same Google account on my tablet, how does that affect the backup and restore on my phone? We Google "know" that one device is a smartphone and the other a tablet? Will all my wifi and app settings transfer over to the tablet?

I should probably just go forth and do this already and see how it plays out. But I'm also wondering if I should create a separate Google account for use with my tablet (as I believe one other person who posted on this thread did) for administrative ease.

when you enter Google account for the first time on your N7 it recognizes that you have not used this device before and will download the settings of your phone.
once it is downloaded it will maintain a separate backup for your N7. so at this point all the settings on your phone and tablet are same but lets say you add a wifi on your Phone and that wont be synced to your N7. they both will be maintained separate.

to see your backup data go here https://www.google.com/settings/dashboard?ref=home under Android you will see a new backup for your N7 is created.

I dont understand why you are so obsessed with having a different account for N7. i use one account for N4 and my N10 and the syncing is seemless.
dismissing a gmail on my phone will dismiss the notification on my n10.

Some data (non-google apps) is unique to the device. Applications from the play store are not. So any settings you have for non-Google products (ex. email accounts, wifi settings, passwords, media downloads, etc) are only on the device on which they were entered. Applications from the play store are available for download to any of your devices unless the application has a download limit that you have hit.

The PlayStore can recognize if it's a tablet or phone by its model info. Apps that are only compatible to phones will not be downloaded to your tablet. Even if you tried to go back and try to download it later, it will give a warning that this app isn't compatible for your device, and the download button will be missing.
