Should I use Xoom in replacement of a laptop?

I have recently had my laptop stolen and I am curious if I should replace the laptop with a tablet. I use my laptops for gaming, homework, web surfing and work. Should I just buy a tablet and not worry about a laptop? I have my tax return coming back and need to purchase something. If I buy a tablet it will be unsubsidized. Just looking for opinions and perspectives.

Oh and I am a Sprint customer with a rooted Evo...so I have some Android experience.

As a gamer I wouldn't buy one. But from home I mostly just surf web, do lots of flash games, flash movies, and I don't really game on my computer anymore. So mine will be for more recreation around the house, and for a basic computer at home, but one I can use in my lap when I hit the couch, and an alternative in reading to my nook(b&w old) depending on my mood. If you are doing lots of gaming, I wouldn't get it as a replacement laptop, but a supplement to.

Sorry to hear about your laptop.

Do you have any other computers? I think it would be very hard to completely replace a PC with a tablet.

Games: Depends on the kind you play. Most high level PC games wont play on a tablet. It looks like there is some work going on to bring some over but it doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon. If you are really only interested in the kind of games you find on Android or iOS than you should be fine with a tablet.

Web Surfing: I feel this is a category that a tablet could easily be as good as a PC. You should have no trouble using a tablet for all your web needs.

Productivity (homework, work, etc): This category is really the most up in the air right now. It really depends on what tablet specific apps come out this year. At a very minimum i would say you would need an external keyboard that you could connect to your tablet (which is doable). In addition if you use microsoft office a lot then your probably out of luck. There are some alternatives for android right now but they are weak for tablets (not optimized). And while I like google docs for some stuff (collaboration mainly) I feel that its still not near Office in effectiveness.

It's hard to see using a tablet as a "real" computer replacement.

That being said, I intend to stop carrying around my notebook, but I'll use PocketCloud to access it remotely for those things which can't be done on a tablet... yet. ;-)

So maybe if you can dig up an old desktop from somebody. It won't have to be the greatest. You'd be covered.

Agreed.

If the Xoom can double as a productivity device (e.g. MS Word using the bluetooth keyboard), I'd seriously consider using it to mostly replace my current laptop.

I already have a gaming PC I use at home, so I wouldn't necessarily use the Xoom for gaming.

But web browsing, typing documents, music, and video? If the Xoom can do all that plus more efficiently, I'd strongly consider getting one.

The only hold up I really have on having a xoom replace my laptop is printing. Although it looks like this is in the development pipe it is not available universely yet. That being said, if you have a desktop, and don't need custom software, I don't see a reason why the xoom couldn't replace 95% of the things you need to do with your laptop for classes and such.

Hell I have friends who have replaced their laptops in class with an iPad, and the Xoom appears to have much more functionality.

Good news, Google did it again and came through with a mobile printing solution :p

Google Cloud Print! its still in beta right now, but it wont be long till its fully rolled out. I got it setup up without much trouble, i just don't know if to many support it yet.

Really? I would think that Verizon would want to lock that down. So you call my Google Voice number and it rings via wifi on the tablet?

Not sure about that, maybe I got it wrong. I know you can use Gtalk to make calls and video calls. I bet someone else will know ..

I too am thinking about the Xoom as a laptop replacement. Would I be able to download a podcast via http to a San Disk Mp3 player attached via USB?

I would doubt this. The xoom can do 90% of what a laptop can do, but remember Honeycomb is still a mobile OS and is not designed to be a hub for all of your other gadgets.

However, you would definitely be able to download a podcast and save it to your Xoom and then upload it via dropbox and share it to other devices that way.

I use the phone 99% more than my laptop! In fact...my daughter has sort of laid claim to my laptop...

I am the same way. I use my Evo for most of my daily computing. My laptop has turned into a ghetto HTPC and my desktop is my go to device when I am home from work and want to play games or do semi-serious computing.

Need an opinion please. I have an ancient laptop that is almost useless, I had an ipad but returned it because it was mostly useless. It was easily replaced by a Droid X that I am thoroughly pleased with. So, the question is, do i replace my laptop with an alienware m11x or a Xoom? I dont work in an office type setting (I own a bar) so I don't really need all the windows type stuff and I'm not a huge gamer at all. Mostly just surf the web, watch videos and music which work great on my X but it can be a little small sometimes. I dont want to lose the ability to back up and store my pictures and music. Do I really need a laptop, or can i get away with a Xoom? Or am I just caught up in the gadget craze? I think I need a margarita. Any advice?

Yup, 2 margaritas and a XOOM :D . Seriously though, you will certainly have enough room to backup and store pics and videos on your XOOM I would think (32GB internal, up to another 32GB on a SD card = 64GB possible total storage). For just surfing the web, or viewing videos, doing e-mail, the XOOM should do wonderfully. I think it will be a great , functional tablet.
