Should Nexus 7 purchased from G-Play this week have 4.1 installed?

Hello! I'm a complete newbie here, so please forgive any stupid mistakes I make.

I was so excited to finally order my Nexus 7. I decided to forgo the instant gratification of buying it from a store because all the retailers listed their stock as having 4.1.

So, I picked up my shipment from UPS yesterday and the packing slip listed Nexus 7 with 4.2, but when I started it up, the device info indicated 4.1 and that the serial number was from Sept. 2012. Since I ordered it online, I want to make sure I get the most recent device, especially after reading about issues that some people have had.

Does anyone know about the difference between builds and what modifications (however minor) may have been made since Sept?

Thanks,

Snocal

Most likely you will get 4.2 pushed OTA. That's what happened to me - my unit is a little older than yours. Go to the Settings screen and use the About Tablet-System Upgrades function to check for pending upgrades....

Thanks for your response. To try and be clearer, my point in specifically choosing to purchase online was to get the latest version--that would, I hope, have resolved at least some of the issues I've read about when updating from 4.1 to 4.2. The nakasi factory image.

My wife got one & it upgraded immediately with no problems. She loves Google Now & the ability to use all reading apps from all the various providers. For the bucks hard to beat. Great also to have a phone & tablet so functionally compatible.

I ordered from Google Play a few weeks ago...my build was December 2012.....my local Staples had a January 2013 build...but I went direct with G-Play to avoid Asus RMA if that was an issue...Google supposedly ships an advance replacement if necessary (W/ credit card hold)...so I had to pay extra for shipping...as opposed to buying from say Newegg (If you are in the USA)
But, I had no idea what build Newegg or any other online retailer had in stock...

Who did you order it online from? A September build seems "pretty old" if you just ordered it a week or so ago.

Haven't noticed any issues with my tablet yet...the only thing I haven't tested is the 3GB memory slowdown effect....

How do you know what build date you have? I purchased mine from TigerDirect locally and got the update pushed to me immediately. No problems at all.

tbh, nothing changed for about 6 months. the hardware is the same. the only thing is the software 4.2 which you will get as soon as you connect to wifi

Addressing the last poster --

The hardware supposedly has been modified...not spec wise, but mfg wise...check other threads...not sure which ones...but I did read some where people opened up their tablets and noticed a few changes....

Besides...over time mfg processes may be tweaked to address shortcomings of earlier models....some Nexus 7 have different eMMC (Memory module) brand in them I think...not 100% sure...

As for build #...do a search for -- Google Nexus 7 Build E80 -- some threads should come back on how to decipher the SN code at the bottom of the box / sticker on your tablet...
If starts with a D it is 2013. C - 2012...then the next couple of digits/letters indicated the month of fabrication.

Dontneedaname--G-play was supposed to indicate Google Play. I bought directly from them thinking (erroneously, it seems) that I would get the most up to date product. Argh.

So, do you have any idea how significant the changes are? I have been searching forums for 2 days and yours is the first direct reference to modifications anywhere. And I'm not a novice searcher. If you have any forum recommendations, I'd really appreciate them.

I got the build info from Settings under About Tablet, but I think the build number I was using was for Android, because since I originally posted, I went forward with setting up my N7 and updated to JB4.2.2, and now the build # is JDQ39. The serial # is in Settings under Status.

I'll search using your terms and post what I find out. Thanks!

Sorry, gave you some bad info on search terms....should be like C60 C70 C80....no E##.....here are some links below I read....in my browser history.

1st link has a post on how to decipher the serial #. You have to look on the sticker under the box, or near the bottom back of your unit.

Just wanted to clarify for warranty- Its "CxO" not Zero(0)!! - xda-developers

C60, C70, C80, C90. What does it all mean Bazel? - xda-developers

Yea...the Settings - Build # is for Android itself, I'm guessing. Serial # in settings...not sure about that. As that # is different the sticker.

Well..if you got it directly from Google...that's odd they would give you a September dated build/serial #. Check again with the links I posted in my last reply. Significant...some mention of screws or padding (Removing I think?) somewhere inside to alleviate the screen lifting...possibly. I can't find the link and pictures...but it was somewhere in the xda-developers forums....I think. Not here.

at this point I've become more confused. I'm not seeing any of these numbers. C-anything. I see a SSN number, a CSSN number a P/N number (i'm looking on the box). my serial number starts with numbers "015" my SSN starts with "CC0". Where are you guys looking?

Okay, after some quick googling and reading, the number i'm looking for is the "CCO". So i've graduated from the C60, C70, etc. Still dont know my build date tho lol Doesnt matter, all is well with it

A new n7 is due this year so google and retailers are dumping any and all stock. The new one will have a rear camera abd hdmi out.

Not true if you don't provide a source. More than likely it won't to keep the cost down.
