Should this processor be getting this warm?

Recently, I've been noticing that the ARMv7 processor in my Max has been very warm, as in 50-55C when idling. Games don't seem to affect it as much as it does the battery (which idles at about 40C), but it seems to be warmer when the accelerometer stop working for a while (usually when playing tilt games).

The battery/accelerometer issue existed before the latest update, but the processor temp issue seems to have started afterwards.

If anyone has any idea what might be causing it, I'd appreciate any advice...

Seems pretty warm for idling. You can look at a few things using these apps. Aida64 can give you thermals, and other things, such as what the CPU speed is running at. Quick System Info can show you what processes are running. It might be able to identify an app that's using excessive CPU cycles.

Have you tried starting your phone in Safe Mode to see if the temps drop? Might be a bad app.

No to safe mode, mostly because I don't know how (or if the temp monitor app will even function in safe mode).

I'll check those two apps and see what they can do.

Cores 1 and 3 CPU are running at 918 and 1134MHz, respectively, (but there do seem to be some activity spikes that wake up and run all four at 1134 MHz) with the scaling governor set to on demand. Most of the processes using CPU are system files. (Per AIDA64)

I don't own your phone so I just recommended apps for you to help troubleshoot.

When you run Quick System Info, go to Settings and make sure to sort by "CPU usage". You can watch the list and see what apps are running and using the most CPU cycles. Since you stated that your temps are during "idling", I would suspect that something is causing the CPU to be active.

I searched for Safe Mode for you, but there are too many hits for various HTC One's. Please search Google for how to get in and out of safe mode for your particular model. The temp monitor app may not run in Safe Mode, but neither will any app that might be causing your temp to be high.

My Note 4 idles at ~ 39 - 40C

Right. When "idling", the only apps running seem to be system apps, so it's likely something I can't kill or uninstall.

Thanks anyway.
