Since I'm most interested in the camera on this phone it would be really great to see some pix that have been taken with it- day, night, flash, no flash, as much as possible. So if you've got any you wouldn't mind sharing that you think represent well the way this things shoots- please share!

Here are some pics I have taken with my phone in different conditions & settings (day, night, black & white, sepia, etc.). There are other camera apps from the market as well but all of these were taken with the stock camera app.

On a seperate (but related) note regarding a dedicated camera button. The LG Marquee DOES have a dedicated hard button (set as the Camera button by default) when pressed down WILL focus & does not actually "snap" the picture until your finger is released.

Thanks for sharing- these are great pix. Both camera-wise and artistically!:) The low light performance- in fact all the performance, blows away my LG Optimus S. I think there are enough examples from your pics alone to provide me with a positive conclusion..

Thanks again!!

yeah, the camera is pretty awesome on that device. Video looks great too.

Does anyone have problems with Macro shots? I cannot get it to focus on anything that is close up, I used to use the Optimus S to take pictures of serial numbers and labels on equipment but with this phone none of the data is readable, even the bar code app has a hard time reading the bar codes from computer screens. Taking a shot of a paper document produces a blurry image too, is my camera defective? I tried every focus option within the app with the same results.

Hmm. Setting the camera to macro takes pretty nice close up photos, however in my brief testing so far I'm noticing that leaving it on "auto" doesn't always enable macro mode when needed.

Here's a close up of an eye as an example. Color grading was done using an effect in the Camera360 app (excellent photo app, btw).

I had to hit macro mode in the settings, otherwise it wouldn't focus.

It doesn't look so macro when its shrunk like this, but click the thing on top to see every disgusting pore detail (YUCK!).

and since we're sharing photos, here's one of my car:

If I get around to it, I'd love to show some video. Very decent optics for a low budget phone.

That's unfortunate- to me the whole paradigm of this phone (and the Optimus) was geared towards fast efficient use of the camera with the dedicated camera button and such. Having to go through menus to reliably focus close-up is definitely a drag. Strange the Optimus seems to focus up macro close automatically without any issues. I use the same as another poster- to grab serial numbers or other tiny print off labels I need to refer back to.

I find I can still do that, personally. I use QR codes all the time, and scan lists and schedules. You just have to hit macro if going in SUPER-CLOSE. I don't find that going that close is necessary for things like you describe. Just shoot from a comfortable distance and zoom in if needed.

Meanwhile, it COULD be a software bug in the camera app. But I have a feeling it has more to do with the sensor size. The Optimus had a very small sensor (not referring to the megapixels, but actual size of the sensor and how much light it can receive).
If you know anything about digital camera optics, you will be aware that a higher quality camera requires a larger sensor to let it more light (again, NOT related to megapixel depth. More megapixels can actually DEGRADE image quality on the same sized sensor since each pixel of the sensor gets less light overall).
But having a larger sensor also means having a wider field of view. In other words, think of cameras like the optimus as a "cropped mode" camera- you are only viewing what would be a zoomed in portion on a larger sensor. Therefore, you might feel like you need to go closer with the marquee to fill the frame with your image, whereas the Optimus could do it from a comfortable distance (and not require manually setting the macro mode).

Just an idea. I could be wrong. :)

I just messed around with my Optimus and it actually does need a toggle to "macro" to focus more reliably on stuff 2-3cm from the lens. So it sounds from your report that the Marquee is at least comparable.

So it's got a larger physical sensor I presume with similar (relatively short) focal length to the Optimus- so it has a wider effective field of view? If that's the case then I'm even more excited. I hadn't looked into field of view specifically, but I am always a fan of "as wide as possible" when going for general people pictures (which is 90% of what I do with a phone camera). With P&S cameras I refuse to even own one that is any less than 24mm wide (35mm film equivalent) on the wide end of the zoom. I wonder if this spec is available anywhere for this phone? Come to think of it, I never see equivelent FOV values spec'd for any phone camera...

Cool!

Truth.

I recall the HTC Titan (new Mango phone) advertised with an F/stop of 2.8 and possibly even listed the FOV (don't recall). First time I saw photographic specs printed. And the last.

As a camera nut myself, I'm spoiled by my 17mm DSLR lens. :)

Meanwhile, I haven't actually tried to compare the FOV between the two devices yet, but I DID notice that the edge of my finger sometimes shows up if holding the phone awkwardly in one hand. My finger is just over the edge of the top, but apparently spills over far enough that it can appear in the FOV. That means its shooting pretty wide I would assume.

There is no question that the optics on this phone are a step up compared to others on the market. Perhaps not better than the GalaxySII or iPhone4 (dare I say it- that device does take some nice photos), but excellent for a budget phone.

I'm with you on being a camera nut. I've been in the full frame DSLR camp for a while now. The speed of advances in light sensitivity in general for digital camera sensors is amazing, allowing the ability to shoot hand held in less and less available light. It seems about the right time for someone to design a phone that holds the importance of digital imaging up to be equal with computing and phone calling. I guess the iPhone is the closest thing to that. But to be honest the dedicated shutter button on the Optimus S, and I guess now the Marquee, ads soo much more to the ability to use the device as a "real" camera. It makes it so much easier to capture a moment when I can, without taking my eyes off a subject, remove my camera (phone) from my pocket, unclock it, and have the camera app up and ready to focus all between the time the camera is traveling out of my pocket and up to my face. The physical button gives you that ability.

I guess we still can't have it all- but I think we should be able to have better... Maybe iPhone5 ;)

Hi, I'm looking for an app to change the focus area on my phone. Is there such an app?

I hope you like the pics and aloha!
