Show Your 5A Photos

I really hesitate to say this, but here goes a couple requests...

Can people avoid posting photos of things taken in normal or good lighting? Just about any camera priced at over $350 can take a decent picture in good lighting.

Also, please resist the temptation to show photos of your pets. We all know what cats and dogs look like. (I'm gonna get ripped, I know it...)

I'd be interested to see unique objects, interestingly framed photos, or beautiful scenery. Or things shot in low light. Or close-up or macro shots. You know, stuff that is going to challenge the Pixel 5a camera. In this context pictures of pets would be fine by me.

Also, it would be helpful to tell us if the photo has been edited in any way.

FIXED IT! For you

I'll start. Last Saturday we had a scene from Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" in our backyard.

You can see the lighting was overcast but the detail is pretty good. I simply pointed the camera out our window and took the shot.

Zoom in and take a look around. Look at the knot in the twine in the roped off grassy area. Check out the woodgrain in the sideboard of the deck. (Or maybe not. I just tried it and apparently Android Central limits the file size that is able to be uploaded, not much zooming ability here.)

Could a moderator tell us what size .jpg file is the allowed maximum? I posted the original 4032 x 3024 image and also tried a 1920 x 1440 and they both ended up being 1 MB in size. There was no difference in the zooming ability.

Great shot! Wow!

For this thread I'll focus on taking pictures in unfavorable conditions with no filters.
This was just shot (5pm Eastern) in very low light inside my home office. Using 2X. Night mode was not enabled.

Pretty good close-up focus. Was that shot in Portrait mode? Or was it simply regular camera setting, point and shoot, focusing on the soccer player?

I ask because the "Goal Getter" sign gets a bit out-of-focus the further away from the player, very similar to how Portrait mode fuzzes up the background.

I'm glad you bring this up because this was not in portrait mode yet it gives the appearance of such. I just pointed and shot the picture. I don't particularly like using portrait mode even on people. I like photos to look as natural as possible but I can see some instances when enabling it can be of benefit.

Anyway I have been curious why the camera automatically applies this portrait like effect when using the 2X option. I even think it has been doing it on the standard 1X when I get up close to an object. If I get about 6 inches away though it won't look like a portrait mode picture. I'll have to keep playing around taking more pictures.

Can you try from your end and see if that happens to you as well?

I could try it, but the background of your photo not being in complete focus is likely simply the f-stop selected by the camera to take the shot. You did say it was low light, so it might have been a low f-stop (2.0 or less) number and a slow shutter speed. You can check by looking at the file information for that photo.

BTW, are you aware you can apply the portrait effect to a photo after the photo has been taken? In other words, you need not select Portrait mode in order to get a Portrait effect.

Good points on the photography comments! That definitely is the case.

As for portrait modes, I was aware! It also works backwards, bringing a photo back to normal from portrait. The Pixel camera / Photos album used to store both versions of a photo at some point but they removed that long ago.

When I eat lunch I use the salt shaker laid on its side as a prop to angle my phone screen upwards so I can surf my phone. I thought if I spilled a few more grains of salt it would make a good picture. I did tap on the camera to focus on the grains of salt just out of the salt shaker head, and maybe a tad bit behind the trailing edge of the shaker head. The camera was warning me to "move back to improve focus". (Obviously, I didn't move back.)

These next two pictures are the same shot, just altered slightly. No processing or corrections was applied to the photos.

This first picture is the original shot at 4032x3024 simply resized to 1280x960.

The second picture is the photo as shot, in full 4032x3024 resolution but I cropped out a portion that is 1280x960. Click on the photo and look at the detail of the facets on some of those salt grains.

There are some amazing shots! Either of those pics with the rainbow in it would make a great phone wallpaper. The night shots at Hogwarts Castle are impressive. Nicely done.

Thanks! I'm so impressed with the quality - I'm certainly no photographer but it's fun to see how this phone does it's magic!
