Shrinking icons and spacibg

I just got a Note 3 and I'm wondering is there any way to shrink the icons and or spacing? I would love to get in more rows. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you use a custom launcher? Most allow you to change the number of row and columns you have on the homescreen and app drawer. It also may be a feature in the settings on your Note, I just know I can't do it from stock Android.

Is a custom launcher anything that needs a root? If not where can I get one?
