Welcome to Android Central! What's the exact model number of the phone, and which carrier are you using? If the phone doesn't support the carrier's 3G/4G bands, it will revert to 1X (which is 2G). Or you might just be in an area of poor reception.

Probably in an area of weak reception. I live in an area, that by verizon' s coverage map, should be receiving a solid 4-5 bars of signal at all times, and no less than 3. However in my particular spot, I live on an elevated spot, and there are trees around. I get 1 to 2 bars of 4G LTE. But then if I go into town just up the road, I'll get 4 to 5 bars. There are individual factors that come into signal reception as well as the broader overall coverage.
