Signal Strength G3 vs G4

Some users of the G3 in the early days of that forum reported a weaker radio than in some other devices. My own crude tests tended to support that but since I live in an area of good signal it didn't have any practical effect. This may have been fixed by LG in later production runs.
Anyway I've been comparing signal strength between my G3 and G4 in different locations. This is not entirely easy to do since the signal often fluctuates as you look at the figures, so you have to grab an average, but a pattern soon emerged. To do this I went to Settings, About Phone, Network, Signal Strength, where the strength is measured in dBm and asu numbers.

G3 followed by G4, just using the asu numbers....higher is better.

Set to GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto in a 4G area, various locations:
48/55
37/39
35/39
45/49

Set to WCDMA-Only in my home area, no 4G, various locations:
15/18
12/15
15/15
17/20
19/21

G4 is better. :)

That's good to know. I know when u tried the g3 (2 of them actually) that my note 2 was able to keep and hold 4g in my home whereas the g3 dropped and wouldnt acquire it back without an airplane toggle. I was hoping the G4 radio was improved.

Thanks for posting these results, I have been debating whether or not to buy a G4 because it seems sometimes phone manufactures seem to forget, first and foremost the phone should function reliably as a PHONE! I hope the cell signal is stronger as well as data / LTE.

Better add a caveat: it's just me testing my particular G3 and my particular G4 in my area, on my network...which is 3 UK. Even so, assuming everything is fairly average, it looks good.

My att g3 was 3-5 dBm lower than my wife's iPhone 5 and my g2 before that....
So I hope the g4 is even better.

Something strange that I've noticed is that when the phone is laying on my leg that the signal drops around 10dbm. I figured out when it kept going to 3g in my pocket. I'd toggle airplane and it would go back to lte (103-110dbm will almost always drop to 3g in my pocket.)
Does anyone else's drop if lying the phone on it's back on your leg? Verizon model btw.

Something I've heard of that may be relevant, is that simply holding the phone may cause a slight drop in received signal....presumably any part of the body may have some slight shielding effect.
In your case, is it simply because the phone is lying flat, which may affect the response of the antenna?

Lower dBm is better though....

True. Mine will increase 10dbm to 120-125 before dropping to 3g. I meant dropping dbm as in the signal gets worse. Its a really strange issue though. I'm hoping a replacement will fix the problem.
Does anyone else have the issue?

Lower negative dbm is better. Lower negative dbm is actually higher dbm.

-110dbm means 110dbm lower than 1mw. So -100dbm is 10db higher than -110dbm. (And since it's logarithmic, 10db is 10 times the signal [3db is twice the signal].) But if you ever see a positive dbm reading on your phone, wrap it in foil quickly - you'll probably toast the receiver. -50dbm is an unbelievably strong signal, and that's 100,000 times below 1mw of signal. A full milliwatt of signal at the receiver will probably let all the magic smoke out of your phone.

Yes...would love to see some comparisons.
My g2 was 3-5 dBm lower than the iPhone at the time, and the same was true with the g3. My g3 is 2-3 lower than my g2 when I tested them.
Motorola is the holy grail, would love to make progress that way.
