All the signal readings I'm sharing are on 4G using the measurement in the settings. I've had as good as -50 and as bad as -114 before it switched to 3G. I know where the tower is near my house and I walked right up to it and got -50. Although I love the device, I can tell you that in marginal areas, like inside my house, the Droid Charge I used to have was about 5 db better which resulted in the Charge getting 4G in 90% of my house and the S III in only about 5%. You can get the Charge to display 4G RSRP signal in diag mode. I had the same issues with the Charge when I got it and the first update they sent for Gingerbread improved it dramatically. I live in Phoenix, so 99% of the time I'm in strong 4G, so it doesn't impact me much.
