SIII arrived today, best way to migrate from Epic 4G?

My SIII arived today and I want to be sure I get everything set up properly, including getting apps, email, etc. moved from the Epic 4G. Is there a thread that describes how to get that done?

I've got my contacts & calendar synced using Google, and would like to be sure to get the 4 email accounts transferred over. Every couple of years, when getting a new phone, this old dog has to re-learn the easy tricks...

I'd appreciate any help.

Probably best to just reconfigure the email app. Don't think it's a good idea to back up and restore from gb to ics.

Otherwise mybackup pro will get your downloaded apps transfered over nicely in believe. Backup on the epic, copy the backup to the internal sd card on the gs3, and restore your apps.

Thanks. I've got MyBackup Root, but I assume it can only be used on a rooted phone, which the SIII won't be, initially. I'll look for mybackup pro and give it a try.

When you suggest that I first backup on the Epic, you mean to the sd card, right? And then just swap that card into the SIII and restore to the new phone?

Just root the S3 so you can use mybackup or titanium backup to restore app date to the new phone. I reinstalled apps from scratch through the play store, but then selectively restored data to those that had needed important info such as email accounts, and all the bookmarks and such in my browser. I rooted the S3 just for this purpose.

My Epic is rooted, but I almost bricked it in the process. I know I'll root the S3, but probably not right away.

Correct, but you might have to copy the backup from the external card to the internal storage on the gs3. I'm not sure if mybackup can use the gs3 external card.

Don't forget you can use SMS Backup and Restore from the Google Play Store to backup and restore your Text Messages !

Also can export your contacts to file and then restore on SGSIII to ensure you get all of em!

I went from my S2 to my S3 and used My Backup Pro backed up online backed up all my other stuff to gmail and I saved everything else to SD and I came out with all my stuff on my new phone. Worked awesome!

Kept all my contacts, ALL my texts (sms and mms) all music, calender entries, alarms... Got it all!

Paul, What's the procedure for exporting the contacts to file? I'm not sure I understand why that is needed, since I think I've got those covered using Google.
Thanks,
Ken

Thanks. Can you describe what you did in more detail? I'm not sure what 'all my other stuff' would include - I would have thought that My Backup Pro would include all 'my stuff'. And how would I back up my other stuff to Gmail?

This is the part of moving to a new phone that wakes me up at 2:30 in the morning - wondering if I'm going to lose some of my stuff in the move!

No problem...

Do a gmail backup. That will cover your contacts, music, & calender.

I recommend purchasing My Backup Pro for $4. The free one didnt work on my friends phone I did and I bought yhe Pro and worked great. Do the backup ONLINE not to SD card. For some reason it hasnt worked for me on 3 phones going from Gingerbread to Ice Cream.

Do the My Backup but EXCLUDE contacts and calender, otherwise it will double up everything you have backed up in Gmail. MyBackup will email you a code to do the Restore on your new phone. Install MyBackupPro on your new phone and hit restore and put the code out of your email in.

So If you are taking your old SD card from old phone to new phone then your pictures will all stay. If you bought a new card you need to transfer all your pics that you want over.

I didnt loose anything on my S2 to S3 transfer.

For me it was google for contacts, exhange server, did a picture/video and "my documents" type of swap with my pc, and finally a sms backup+ app that synced my text messages and call log. Best migration I've done, I feel like I lost nothing really except some game saves I didn't care about anyways.

What is doing a Gmail backup? Same as my Google accounts? Thanks.

Isn't all the Gmail data 'in the cloud'? Why would you need to back it up? Can't you just log into your account on a new phone and have all the data instantly accessible?

Edit - BTW - I just upgraded to the S3 this weekend from an Epic. I just logged back into my email services, and re-installed any apps I wanted from Play, and I'm done (but, I don't keep any data on my devices that isn't synced - email/contacts/cal to Exchange, music via Google Music, pics to Picasa, & other files via Google Drive).

I'm getting ready to migrate from an EVO OG to an EVO 4G LTE. I don't understand the comment about backing up gmail. Won't that just re sync when I log in with the new phone? Sounds like mybackup pro is all I need to get apps and app data transferred. Correct?

my backup pro will only backup/restore apps. It will not backup or restore data unless you are rooted...

Hi Keith

Do you have root access on both the old device and this new s3?

If not im sorry you must have missed the information on the market description of the app :

Data/setting of applications can only be supported if you have a rooted phone, or if the application integrates with us.
