silent boot and custom boot animations not working

Silent boot worked a couple days ago for me, now it has stopped working. I uninstalled/re-installed and still no dice. Custom boot animations are not working either. Has anyone else had trouble with silent boot or custom boot animations? Just wondering if there are any known corrections to this problem.
