silly question

OK, I have a silly question that may be obvious. Im finally going to jump into the smartphone world! Ive decided on the Bionic and have read up as much as I can to come to that decision. Being new to the smartphone world, I will be on a tiered data plan. My question is for the stock email app or others for the bionic. If you get an email with a large attachment, does it download the attachment and immediately count against your data or do you have the option of viewing the email, but not actually downloading the attachment? Sorry if this is a dumb questions, but Ive never had an android phone before. Im pretty tech savy, but this will be completely new for me. Im trying to figure out which data plan I think Ill need.

There is an option to only download attachments automatically when on wifi. I believe that is enabled by default.
