SIM unlock question

So my G5 is a T-Mobile. I had an issue and left T-Mobile. It was still under a 2 year contract. With that being said, can I still buy one if the sim unlock services and use another carrier or a prepaid carrier?

Does the 2 year contract have any bearing on the situation?
