slow down diagnosis - app to view processor, network use/load?

I'm having occasional slow down issues with my captivate - i'll hit the side button, go to unlock or swipe the screen lock and it won't react. screen will go off, try again - screen will go on-off, hit the button, screen wipe doesn't register. with persistence, I'm eventually able to access.

When I do, the phone will be slow - pausing, slow keyboard response, elongated haptic feedback. the phone crawls. in most cases, there is a arrowed circle icon at the top bar - I think from the K-9 email app, but sometimes it isn't clear what app it might be as it bogs down without that visual. I'm wondering if it is an email polling issue on one of my accounts.

Anyway, I was wondering if there is an app or built in log that would help me figure out what is taking up so many processor or network resources that everything else slows down. this just started within the last week, but I don't see any new apps that could be causing it and I've run a task killer to eliminate the obvious ones. Killing K-9 helps sometimes, but not always.

Any ideas on how to best diagnose?

OK, one more bit of info. I killed all the email apps, and things went mostly back to normal. But, just now I noticed the battery level is down, the phone is hot, and it is slow. I just turned off the phone and it won't turn on...and doesn't look like it turned fully off - the home keys are all lit. So, a battery pull to get out of it.

Anyone else experience it?

Slow down = Lag issue

I'm having occasional slow down issues with my captivate

What you're experiencing is the "Lag" issue that people refer to throughout the forum. I was experiencing it with e-mail and Facebook especially (and with noLED) until I fixed the lag issue. Once I did, I had no slow downs whatsoever.

There are lag fixes out there. You should weigh if you want to root your phone to implement them.

I've also seen other users who say leaving bluetooth on when it's not paired can cause their phone to overheat and slow down.

I removed noLED a while ago so it isn't that. I haven't tried to manage BT, but I frequently turn it off. I'm already rooted and tempted to do the lag fix but I'm worried that I'll end up with corrupted data. Has anyone had an issue with data corruption? I'm particularly concerned since this phone has battery issues - it's the only phone I've ever had that has gone dead on me several times - sometimes within a few hours of a full charge. I assume it is a problem with BT, the GPS, or the cell radio and a locked data connection or something.
