Slow EVO 3G speeds

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

My wife got an EVO 2 days ago, and yesterday, she was noticing that the data speeds were really slow over 3G. Wifi works fine. (Our home isn't in 4G coverage area, so I couldn't test that.) So, I made sure all of her EVO settings matched the settings of my EVO. The configurations of the phones are exactly the same, but when I hold them next to each other and launch the same pages, or maps, or anything... her phone is consistently far far behind the speed of mine. I also ran the speedtest.net app side by side and her download never went above 0.13 Mbps, while mine was always in the 1.2 to 1.5 range.

Are there any deeper system settings or something that might need to be tweaked, or does she just have a lemon?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Call Sprint and talk with them. They should be able to reprovision her data. Also, have you gone into System Updates to see if there are any updates for PRL or Profile? If those things don't work take it back and get another one.

OK, I'll call tonight and ask about the data reprovisioning. I did do the PRL and Profile updates last night, though, and that didn't seem to help. I'm thinking it might just be a lemon.

If all those pan out and you're still experiencing issues, this could be cause by the phone's 3G radio. I would suggest you take the phone in for a diagnostic test.

A few questions - Is she running any other apps than the stock pre-install? Is their any Task killer installed on the phone?

*Attention*
If you call or return the phone for repairs - the first thing they're going to tell you, or do is a "Reset of the device". You could try doing that first... if the problem persist then take the phone in for repair or replacement.

*Note*
Be advice that any reset of the device will erase all data off the phone. {Excluding > pics, videos, etc.

Good Luck.

I went through her phone last night to make sure she hadn't downloaded any apps that might be causing problems. I only left the stuff that I was sure was ok, that were running fine on my phone. She's not running a Task Killer. I'll try resetting it tonight, before I call Sprint, just to make sure. Won't be that much of a problem, considering she just got it, so it's not too customized as of yet.

I had this happen on mine a few times. It ended up being a modem issue connecting to the tower.
I diagnosed it by downloading a widget called Mobile Signal Widget. This TRULY will show if your connected to 3G CDMA EVDO versus 1X. The phone will always show 3G even if you loose the data connection and its a 1xRTT connection aka 1X.
Once you have done that download SpeedTest.net and run a few speed test for comparison. On my EVO i would notice my PING times were 999ms (the program will not go any higher but others will) Every time my PING times were incredibly high i had really slow data speeds.
Once i verified this i would put the unit into airplane mode and wait about 10 seconds and reconnect. This usually fixed the problem.

Also i recommend SystemPannel or the lite free version, SystemPannel Lite.
This helped me identify if my processor was stuck at 100% usage.
Ironically putting the phone into airplane mode also fixed this most of the time.

The times my Data connection issue or processor usage issue werent fixed by airplane mode i would then just power the EVO off and wait a few seconds and turn it back on.

Hopefully this helps.

bigwrigg-awesome advice,i was also having problems with my speeds and tried the airplane mode trick and immediately tested afterwards and my speeds more than tripled, thanks!

I am glad this little trick worked. :) Feel free to click the Thanks button for that post. hint hint, wink wink, nod nod. LOL

OK, so... I ended up trying all the fixes and tips (thanx everyone), but nothing worked. I ended up just getting it replaced. Hopefully this new one is all good. BTW, thanx bigwhigg for that widget suggestion. That thing was a very useful way to show the Rep at radio shack just how slow the phone was. It constantly had a picture of an android crying next to 1x. Haha. It was patheticly slow. Thanx again everybody.

so i tested again a few minutes ago and the highes i got on 3g,not WiFi was 1.27 Mbps

1.27 down is not bad. For me anything above 750k is good.

mikevillain Glad to see that helped them see it was probably a bad device. I would like to see HTC change the 3G option to show 1X when it looses the data connection. Also for those of you who dont know, technically the 1x is the voice side of the network and EVDO is the data side.
Something else you can do to help you see if its a netowrk issue (signal recieving wise) is to download a program called Real Signal.
This app will show 2 distinct sets of signal bars, one for voice and one for data. I have used it a few times and in conjunction with Signal Widget was able to identify a couple of spots where my data connection gets so low i loose it. When the phone goes to 1X for data it is really a battery hog.
Give Real Signal a try and let us know what you think.

sprints 3g speeds are horrid. with any of the three other major carriers in the us, i can get 10x the 3g down speeds of my sprint 3g. this is done in the store or in real life with friends phones. ill be leaving sprint, hopefully today, for a faster, more consistent service.

Not to be an ass or anything but your saying 10x the speeds of Sprints 3G.
My guess is your really over exagerating these claims as my SPRINT EVO and EPIC both have consistantly had 750K to 1.5MB down at any given time, unless theres a netowrk or handset issue.

So by your math Verizon or ATT can be 7.5Megs to 10.5 Megs down.
oh wait, that would be impossible since the current standards wont permit that.

Maybe you mean twice as fast, or three times as fast.

Lets be real, compare apples to apples. Not a broken apple to a healthy watermellon.
And since your not very good at math, a broken apple would be a sprint phone that could be having a modem issue causing slow speeds and the watermellon is your exagerated claim of 10x faster.

Sounds like your just mad at sprint and looking for an excuse to jump ship.
Not only that but if your claims were true sprint wouldnt have any business.

Also it would help if you had actual comparisons, like real speed tests, types of phones used, results.

My Evo hauls ass when I'm at home.

my evo pulls in 130kbps(inconsistently-sometimes its faster, sometimes slower), while these verizon/at&t android devices: droid2 global, droid2 r2-d2, droid x, aria, etc. are doing 1000-1200kbps. ill get screens tomorrow if i must. what do you call that?? i call it 10x the down speed of my sprints 3G. its not my device, its the network. how? all my friends with sprint android devices experience the same thing. im a tech nerd and place accurate blame where it needs to be. perhaps its only in my area. perhaps it isnt. I hate verizon's policies and customer service(was with vzw for 10+years), I hate gsm networks. so naturally i went with sprint. they have the best plan in wireless atm but the speeds arent worth my time. the network is useless to me unless its fast, reliable and on when i need it.

How do you screen capture? My download was 861kbps and upload was 590kbps on Speed Test. that was from a server in Wichita, KS and I live in CO. 997 dl, and 640 ul when I chose the server in Durango, CO and 1092 dl, and 570 ul when using Colorado Springs, CO server
