Smart Lock quit working

I love Smart Lock in Lollipop and have been using it since it came out. However recently it is making me type in my PIN every time when I'm home. It is enabled and I have the location Home defined and it's setup so it only enables Smart Lock when I'm at Home. The GPS is turned on and it gets my location correct when I look at Google maps. Any ideas what may have happened?

Thanks.

I noticed this on my Nexus 5 as well. I wonder if the latest Google Play Services might have messed up Smart Lock.

On both my N7 2012 and 2013, Smart Lock works if I wake my device within a fairly short amount of time. However, if I wake it after hours of not using it, then I have to enter my PIN to unlock.

Edit 3/19: Smart Lock (using home location) has stopped working on both on my 2012 and 2013 N7's. Now asking me for PIN every time...

This started happening to me yesterday. I have tried all sorts of ways to fix it, but no.

I have contacted Google, and was given a non-answer. I have requested a call-back for tomorrow. I'll let you know if a solution is forthcoming.

Trusted Place is working on my Nexus 7 but stopped working on my Moto G 2014 a couple days ago. I've tried all the different Location settings and none of them make any difference. As a matter of fact Smart Lock has pretty much completely stopped working on the Moto G.

I've pretty much given up on Trusted Face on either device. More often than not I just get the Show Your Face message, even when my face is clearly outlined. Trusted Place was working up until a day or so ago on the Moto G. I also noticed that when either device is off (sleeping) for awhile, when I turn it on, it takes several seconds before I get the WiFi icon, even though I'm in the same room as the router.

I promised an update if I was given a solution.

  1. Settings > Storage > Cached data > Clear cached data. This did not work for me.
  2. Wipe the cache partition. This also did not work for me.
  3. Do a factory reset — from Recovery Mode (not from Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset). This too did not work for me.
After some more diagnosis, it turned out that I have a faulty set. It will be replaced under warranty.

I hope that steps 1 or 2 will help you, thereby avoiding having to do a factory reset. Note that steps 2 and 3 take a long time to run.

Interestingly, after the factory reset, there was a new option on Smart Lock (which I have not tested): "On-body detection". The description reads:

Keep your device unlocked while it's on you. Just unlock once and your device stays unlocked as long as you keep holding your device or carry it on you. … Any time you set your device down, the device locks because it's no longer on you.

That's nice, but I still wish that Google would allow trusted WiFi points, which (if linked to the MAC address) can be more reliable than trusted places.

Further update:

I received my replacement "new" refurbished phone. The Smart Lock still didn't work.

The Google chap had me restart the phone in Safe Mode (apparently, something that the previous support representative should have suggested), but still it doesn't work.

Oh well. It seems that this is a new bug, which the representative will "escalate". If he should find a solution for me, I'll share it here.

Interestingly, the new phone's GPS and compass work much better than my old phone's, so I'm keeping the new one and returning the old one to Google.
