Smart Switch with blacked out screen

Hi can anyone help please ,My S6 edge screen has gone black and I cannot get any response from it. I am told I need a new screen but may lose my data.
I want to save my data etc.I have been to the Samsung shop they said download Smart Switch and transfer data to my PC.
I downloaded to the Pc, the screen tells me to connect my phone to the Pc via a USB cable, which I have done , but my phone is not showing as connected, any ideas please

You have to get passed the lock screen. If you set up a Samsung account you can log in to it on the net and remotely unlock the screen. If you use a password you will need an OTG adaptor/USB keyboard to enter it.
I hope you will back up your data in the future.
