My smart unlock :places, decided to stop working suddenly. I've got GPS locations turned on, smart unlock turned on, my home places are my home address is correct. I don't know why its not working. I did recently perform a factory reset to fix a call-incoming issue, but when I set my phone back up, the trusted places worked for a short time. Can anyone help?

Location on high?

Apparently GPS in Google maps is off. I entered my neighbors address and it now works. Odd.

The smart unlock (location) is the only thing that I can't get to work on my new N6. I've tried two location modes (high accuracy and battery saving). No matter what I do it always needs the pin code to unlock.

Smart Lock Trusted Places was broken when Google Play Services was updated to 7.0.99. Google is aware. Apparently they don't test these things before release.

Several very long Google Product Forums threads on this.

First of all... this seems to be an Android 5.1 problem since my Nexus 5 does the same thing. Here is a thread on Google product forums where they discuss it.

I was able to make smart unlock work on both the N5 and the N6 by adding another "trusted place" near my house (but, oddly, about 50 feet South on both phones) -- that's where the system apparently thinks it is.

Here's another weird thing about this: if I turn "location mode" to "battery saving" (so it uses wifi and other radio signals but no GPS) it still had the problem (until I correct it as above). I would think that if the system can see that it's really close to my home wifi, that would be enough to satisfy it that the device is home. To put it another way, when I'm inside my house the GPS may be way off because it can't get a good shot at the sky but the strong wifi signal should make it totally clear that the phone is in my house. This is true for the N5 and the N6.

I will repeat: it is NOT a 5.1 problem. It is a Google Play Services 7.0.99 problem.
