Having an 8 core processor or a complete 1080p display and excessive amounts of ram and huge batteries. is it ever going to get to the point that it will never be needed? When will 8 cores ever be fully used for a reall phone application, wouldnt 2 or 4 be enough. How can someone actually see the different between 1080 and 720 with the naked eye. Does it make that much of a difference. I can see more or faster ram and bigger batteries helping out. But does anyone think that the new smartphones will be to much for what someone will actually need and actually use? This is not meant to sounds as a rant but im just saying. With the new smartphones out there I cant see anyone fully using or taking advantage of the new processor a screen resolution.

Well first off no phone currently has an 8-core processor. NO, the S4 is NOT an 8-core processor. Yes, the chip has 8 cores but only 4 operate simultaneously at a time, making it a true 4-core chip with a 4-core power saving option. 1080p may not be 'necessary' but I enjoy the higher resolution and running my ripped blu-ray shows in their native revolution. As for huge batteries, I honestly think the battery tech needs to improve 10-fold. Whether that's more efficient processors or higher mah I don't know. Either way we need more battery life however it comes about. As many have said phones are more than thin enough. I would trade a few millimeters for an extra full day of battery life. This may sound crazy but I look forward to the day I can plus my S5 or HTC TWO into my 50" tv and use a gamepad to play PS3/360 style games off my phone while it charges, or stream blu-ray quality content as I travel down the road on LTE. Sure 'most' people don't need the power right now, but I trust developers to come up with awesome programs to use the power. Maybe not today, but sooner than we think. :)

Right now, no those specs are NOT needed. But companies try to make their product future proof. Developers can make their product to utilize what's in the phone. As fast as time can change technology, they have to go way above and beyond just in case.

The International S4 IS an 8 core processors.

It has 8 cores, it just functions as a quad core.

But I agree with all else you said

I am guessing you are mainly thinking of the Galaxy S4? If so, that isn't a true 8 core processor. It is 2 Quad cores. One set is meant for high performance, the other to conserve battery power. Similar to a 4 barrel carburetor. The other two barrels only kick in when the engine really needs them. In the case of the S4, the CPU will shift from battery friendly to speed friendly as the case dictates.

I can see and to an extent agree with your basic point. I can easily agree more RAM. I don't really understand 1080 HD, unless you are talking a minimum of a 7" device and even then that is debatable. But overall, to give my opinion on your question would be a good many people don't use their smartphones to the fullest capability anyway. It depends on the specific function of the phone and the user. Take me, I hardly ever use the camera. I could care less about it. I am glad it's there, but most of the time, I take my digital point and shoot with me when I know I am going to take snapshots. I also even more rarely post photos on social sites (in fact, I am hardly there either. AC is about as electronically social as I get...lol) Now, to the exact opposite, take most teenagers who live on Facebook and Instagram, the camera is used frequently.

Basically, the only way to build a top selling device is to cram as much memory, battery life, digital capturing and processing speed to try to please everybody.

I agree with most of what everyone has said so far. But as of right now most new phones coming out are ahead its time and the way technology advances itll stay that way. It would be nice if a phone turned into a 50" tv but its still a phone. Im not sure if im against the technology advancing so quick because I and a lot of ppl cant keep up with the latest tech or it just seem crazy ridiculous that a phone can do so much in such a small.
