As a child of the 90s, I raised a Tamagotchi and wore a Pikachu pedometer that made the critter happy the more I walked. Decades later, this concept should have a renaissance on smartwatches, with virtual pets standing in for your personal fitness goals.

Two things:
1) As the father of a couple of pre-teens, I can assure you that Tamagotchi don't need reviving because they're still quite popular. The originals are still sold, along with new modern ones with color screens, cameras and wifi.
2) Someone already made a Garmin app called WatchiBeastie that does pretty much everything you suggested. Looks like it's a combo of normal pet raising and using your health stats. It's the first app promoted on my Garmin Connect IQ homescreen.
