SMS and Emoticons

I've got an SIII and was looking for a better SMS experience. I installed Go SMS Pro, which is actually pretty nice. It doesn't take care of one of the complaints I have though.

Is there any way to add different combinations to the smiley/emoticon replacements? This Android phone will replace with a graphical smiley, but not What's up with that!?!? Even my Palm Pre would recognize and replace both version of those, along with =) !!

Any way (sans root) I can "fix" this?
