Android Central Question

Google says I cannot use Hangouts anymore, that I have to use Voice. [Mod redacted language]Does anyone know of an app that will ignore my phone's native phone number and allow me to attach my google phone number to it? Every time I install an SMS app, it automatically grabs my phone's number, and changing it to my google phone number doesn't work.

Welcome to Android Central! So just to be clear -- you don't want to use the Google Voice app to send text messages?

The short answer is No, there isn't an app that will use your GV# over your phone's actual number.

I'm not sure what Google has done to accomplish this but in every instance I know of the GV# is rejected.

You will also find that GV is very restrictive when it comes to messaging. In a recent discussion I actually uncovered a lot of information about GV and messaging. Some of those highlights, or not so highlights, are;

Group messages are limited to 7 contacts.

Resending the same message or sending multiple messages that don't get replies will result in your account being suspended and/or removed.

Sending too many links is subject to suspension and/or cancelation of your account.

And the biggest of them all, Google doesn't care. Teacher's, churches and not for profit orgs. were asking for such privileges and Google flat told them, find another way.

Here is the link to that discussion... https://forums.androidcentral.com/a...nd-google-voice-group-mms-limit-new-post.html

You're probably better off using something like Tango or one of the other hundred or so apps that offer messaging with an alternate Phone# included.

Yeah, now that Hangouts dead, it's time to juggle different apps around to replace yet another one of Google's dead project follies. I did delve into the Google Voice app for a bit but only tentatively. I won't be surprised if Google kills this off too in the near future. The GV app I wouldn't miss too much, but losing my GV phone number would be a real inconvenience.
Anyway, most text messaging apps can be manually reconfigured to use a specified phone number (other than your default carrier-based number). I use the Signal app and here's instructions on switching to a different phone number:

Whichever text messaging app you prefer should have the ability to be altered in a similar way, it's just a matter of delving into the app's Settings menu to bypass the auto-configuration that defaults to your primary, carrier phone number.
