SMS app like iMessage

I'm looking for an SMS app that will work like iMessage in that if you text someone who is using the same app it will give you delivered and read notifications, but if you text someone who isn't using the app, it works like a regular text message.

Is there such an app?

Thank you for your response. I like WhatsApp but it doesn't have the integrated inbox feature like I'm looking for. Text+ has this feature but you can't use your own phone number. It seems like an app like this doesn't exist.. Oh well! Will have to suggest it to the developers! Thanks anyway.

I managed to find a "solution" through GO SMS Pro/GO Chat. It's not a true iMessage experience and does require some setup, but it's the closest I can find. The article I wrote includes some instructions on how to set it up.
