Will this work in the US? If so, how? Does it use it's own number to send messages to your contacts? How will they be able to reply? This is from the Engadget review of the tab and was just wondering how it would work. Thanks!

Messaging, Contacts -- These are pretty self-explanatory. Even though the Tab isn't technically a phone since all the US carriers have restricted its calling ability, you can use the messaging app to send SMS or MMS messages or e-mails to other contacts. Like the others, you've got a two pane view in landscape mode -- you can look at your contacts on the left side and message from the right.

My friend is excited about getting his Galaxy Tab from T-Mobile and keeps telling me how it will have it's own phone number, which make sense to be able to send SMS and MMS. Sorry I don't have a more concrete source :p

It works just like a normal mobile phone here in europe, but I understand that the dialer has been removed in USA.

Download something like handcent and give it a go...easiest way to find out.

That sounds right, I just tried calling my GT number and it just say the wireless number you call is not available. You are able to send and receive text messages from that number.

I plan on using Google Voice for text services since I'm going to use this with WiFi only mostly.

It definitely works on T-Mo. There is a "messaging" app. But they are charging an extra $10 / month for the SMS / MMS service. Having said that, I have used it and it works perfectly fine.

Apparently if you're on-contract with T-mo, the $40/mo 'Unlimited' plan has SMS included. I don't know about MMS though. To be honest MMS on T-Mo has always been hit or miss with me.

FWIW my Tab has a phone number, but when I call it I get a message saying "At the subscriber's request, this phone number does not accept incoming calls"
