sms not converting to mms when emoticon is used

So when I enter an emoticon in any of my text messages it doesn't turn from sms to mms therefore no one is able to see them. My normal text messaging app is hangouts and I couldn't for the life of me find somewhere to switch input modes or a way to switch from sms to mms with emoticons in use. It's really frustrating since I tried using the default messaging app on my note 4 from AT&T with the input mode set to automatic. Still nothing. Anyone have any suggestions?

Welcome to the forums.☺

You could try Messaging, 3-dot menu, Settings, Text messages, Character Encoding. I'm not sure that it will help....may be for incoming messages.... but it's worth a try.
