When I text and use the "insert smiley feature", only the android symbol shows instead of the chosen smiley. How can I correct to show the actual smiley?

When I text and use the "insert smiley feature", only the android symbol shows instead of the chosen smiley. How can I correct to show the actual smiley?

Unfortunately in the stock sms app I think it is not possible to change what the smilies look like. I tried to figure this out once and the only option I saw was to use s different sms app. I ended up sticking with stock knowing that my friends with other phones(non android) still see the icons as normal smilies and the android ones grew on me
