So how much am I really missing?

I've had my SF since day one, rooted, de-Binged, etc... I'm a Mac user, so I can't use Odin and haven't messed with trying to get CWM to work. Am I really missing out by not having CWM and the ability to flash ROMs?

My wife has Vista on her MBP via boot camp, so I could just use that if needed. Just wanted to get everyones thoughts before messing with it.

Well jt's super clean rom and kernel are nice and smooth, so imo yes you are missing out. But if you can just use a windows comp, your fine. :)

I wouldn't say you're missing out on too much. If you've de-bloated the phone and have it set up to your liking, what more do you really want? Clockwork is great for backing up your existing setup if you'll be messing around with it or another ROM, but if you won't be doing any of that stuff, it's not necessary.

Personally, I've tried several ROMs, but keep coming back to my optimized (de-bloat/bing'd) setup. It runs fast and stable and that's all I really want. So, if you don't intend to mess around with your system or try out different ROMs, you're really not missing out on anything.

You can install CWM via Rom Manager.

I was running JTs ROM which is great but I like just removing/changing what I need fromm the stock ROM.

Are you using a voodoo kernel or a JT kernel?

Coming from a droid and loving cwm i find it next to pointless on my fascinate its good for flashing files but thats about it. I have made a few backups but if i ever try to use one i just fc errors at bootup.

And yes i format everything i can before i do a restore. I hope koush is working on this version to make it better. Including a partition menu with a way to easily format boot/system/ would be nice and prob help with the issues.

That's strange I flash and use backups all of the time and have never had fc issues with my restores. Do you have a voodoo kernel?

So I installed CWM via ROM Manager, and when i try to make a backup it fails. Any suggestions?

If you just used ROM Manager to install CWM that will not work. I tried that myself and when it boots into recovery I was still in the stock recovery screen. Unfortunately you have to use Windows to install the .tar file to your phone with Odin then you can flash it with ROM Manager.

I do find it a little unfortunate that there aren't other options for other OS's like Linux and Mac but that is why I have a dual boot computer, for the software that absolutely, positively has to have Microsoft.

To be sure you do/don't have ClockwordMod Recovery use ROM Manager to reboot into recovery. At the top it should say:

ClockwordMod Recovery v2.5.1.0

With the list of options below it in green if your recovery does not look like this then you do not have CWM installed. I believe the stock recovery says something to the effect of Samsung Recovery. Not sure of the exact terminology.

Yeah, I can't run it on my virtual machine unfortunately (Samsung drivers don't play nice). You only need Odin for like 15min, so I did it on someone else's computer. Of course, if you really #$%* things up, then you need Odin. I will need to dual-boot Winblows one of these days before I mess with anything :(
