I have never felt like such a newbie on anything..................so if i flash to a new rom, will i lose my apps, contacts,su? i know...simple question...just learning.

Contacts should be saved if they are listed as Google contacts. Log into your Gmail account from a computer and if your contacts are all still there, then no you won't lose them.

SU will stay as long as it is a ROM from one of these forums that you flash from a .zip. Not if you run an RUU from the computer.

Paid apps will still show that you paid them in the market, and you can download them again. There are other programs that such as Titanium Backup or MyBackupPro that will let you back up all your apps paid or not and restore them after the flash.

And remember - do a nandroid back up before flashing anything.

Just to add to Fazulka's post:

- Most ROMs you will download require a wipe since there are different variations and each may be based from difference sources. You will be required to wipe all data that can be easily restored through google (contacts) and the paid version of titanium backup (apps) to make the process seamless. If you upgrade to a new version of a certain ROM a wipe may not be required. Read the Dev's instructions thoroughly before flashing to know if a wipe is required.

- Apps to SD (AP2SD) makes things easier by placing apps on the SD card within an EXT partition so you don't have to redownload them or use a paid app. It has it's pros and cons depending on who you ask.

The only things that I have lost when flashing that I really miss are organization of my home screens, text messages, and account setups like facebook and email accounts. And I'm a novice so there are probably ways of preserving those too...

That MyBackUp Pro that I mentioned does most of that... I not sure if EVERY little setting will stay the same, but it will save your home screen icons and widgets, and many of the settings in your apps.

i think the backup programs dont save your logins, for security purposes of course. but MyBackup and Titanium are both great programs.

sms backup & restore by Ritesh Sahu is an app I often use to back up sms then restore it when needed. It doesn't do mms, but there might be other apps for that.

Mybackup does save your home screens.

they call it "android home" in the backup list.

dont forget, it cant restore a shortcut for something thats not installed, so make sure you've put all your programs back on before restoring the andoid home screens.

i use it all the time.

My backup does everything except voicemail. for that one item i use titanium backup. Everything else i use mybackup.
