So my Tab stopped responding...

I'm staring at it right now, if I plug in the charger the screen comes back on, rotates, makes a noise when I get an e-mail and all that wonderful stuff. But the screen does nothing, the volume buttons do nothing, and the power button does nothing. So with that being said, how to I turn this thing off?

I believe holding the power button for 10 seconds resets it

What happens when it doesn't?

This is a MAJOR hardware design flaw if there's no way to turn the device off when it locks up like this. Since last night I'm literally stuck here trying to run the battery out hoping on a whim that'll give me my inputs back.

Didn't mean to hit the thanks there...

Without being plugged in, try holding power and volume + and see if that forces a reboot

I believe you need to hold the power button and the volume up button for a few second then release the volume button while still holding power, then it should reboot. I think thats how I did it after having a similar issue

It's doing absolutely nothing. All inputs are completely unresponsive. This is unbelievable.

I might take a YouTube video of this just to show how in disbelief I am that a device, which still rotates, notifies me I have emails and everything else you can do from a lock screen no longer responds to touch OR the hardware buttons. Beyond words, unbelievable.

I appreciate all the help I've gotten so far though, thank you, but I'll keep looking for something that works. The best part is, I can't even return this thing now cause all my informations on it :) and if the inputs still don't respond once the battery dies, there'll definitely be no way for me to wipe it clean. Isn't that wonderful?

My Tab did the same thing. I held both the power and volume down buttons for 5 sec, released the volume button waited 5 more sec then released the power button and it rebooted. All has been well since.

Or calling samsung for support?

I might try that in a bit, Live Chat seems to be taking forever.

Edit- noman, can you confirm with my video that you've had the same exact issue? Or did yours lock up software-wise?

I'm praying it's just a software issue, as weird as that sounds. Here's what happened:

First, the power button acted strange right out of the box. Waking it up, I'd press it and the screen would come back on full brightness and instantly turn back off. Doing that again, the same thing would happen. On the third try the brightness was correct (auto) and I was able to unlock and use the device.

Last night, the Live Wallpaper froze. Everything with the exception of Flash still worked, but the Live Wallpaper would constantly stop it's animation.

Not long after, it completely stopped responding. Power button, volume buttons, and touchscreen all have no effect on the device though the software itself is still running - I can rotate the screen, get emails and IM notifications, even Skype calls. Calling it just now however, caused it to lock up software wise and now I'm staring at a blank screen that won't go into standby (kind of a good thing if discharging the battery will fix this). But still. With all that being said, it gives me reason to believe it's a software issue despite the probability of it being the opposite.

An update: YouTube - ‪Galaxy Tab 10.1 Design Flaw Update‬‏

Basically, after the battery died I plugged in the charger and low and behold, the power button wakes it up. So good news in that it's not a hardware issue, bad news in that it is a software issue and this enormous problem could happen to anyone.

They need to release a firmware update to fix this. ASAP.

Thanks for this post! I JUST got my tab in yesterdy and after a day of using it, it wouldn't resond or anything. And I knew the battery was at least 50%. I just tried your technique, and it sure rebooted it!!

I've had a very similar issue. Twice (the latest being last night) my screen starts glowing from a standby state. What I mean is that with the screen off (and power on) a blank screen will appear. The only way to get it out of that state is to hold the power button down for about 20 seconds & let it reboot.

I guess I need to go ahead and exchange at BB & re-start the 30-day clock.

I'm pretty sure it's 30 days. Returned Asus Tformer after 3 weeks with no questions.

Mine did the same thing. I'm hoping it doesn't happen again.
