If you stop 10 people on the streets and ask them what they think of the Xperia series no one knows anything about it, some never even knew Sony even made phones.

Why are they doing such a poor job with this?

What carrier is the new Xperia on?

I keep hearing great things about don't phones but no one can tell me what carriers they are on

Because its hard to effectively market 100 different Xperia's. HTC has learned the hard way and finally changed their ways, its only a matter of time until Sony changes too.

You'd probably get a similar response asking 10 people about the Nexus 4.
Depends who you're asking.

Seems Xperia devices are more known outside of the US, not sure why though could be Samsung buys up the space inside retailer's stores.

I doubt it.

Nexus can be picked up at tmobile and is a popular phone, but Xperia on the other hand...

Sony poured a lot of dough in erickson. They clearly aimed the new wares at gamers, but the "playstation phones" never caught on. (Remember those ?)

They are just starting to create really interesting devices, but it unfortunately coincides with serious cash flow problems at Sony. This probably makes it a lot harder to gain marketing budget allowances. Added to that: a less than stellar performance of past devices has carriers very skeptical of sony's wares.

I think sony is playing it safe, from a comercial point of view, I believe the strategy is sound. They have to wait for Samsung to falter before making an agressive push. Any big marketing push would just be drowned be Samsung right now.
