Softkey for recent apps on Note 8?

That's not what I'm talking about. In order to go to Recent Apps, I have to hit the soft key for home (which can be done from the Note 8 powered off), and then hit the key on the left. On an iPhone I can double click on the home key and get to recent apps. So what I was hoping was that I could somehow get to the recent apps like I get to home... one motion instead of two. Most of the time when I open my phone I want to go to recent apps instead of home.

I don't understand. You don't have to hit home to go to recent apps, it's a dedicated button.
Are you talking about most used or favorite app icons?

I've never owned an iPhone, so I don't know its features.

you mean hard key then? if so only the home button is pressure sensitive and can't be customized

There are 3rd party apps that can customize the behavior of the Home Button, but most likely those require root and even then I'm not sure they'll have any effect when the screen is off. Like others said, when the screen is off and/or your phone is locked, only the home button is accessible, and it can only prompt either Home or the Assistant with a long press.

If you use Nova Launcher, you can set the home button to open recent apps from your main home screen. So it will work like this: while within an app, press home to go to home, press home again to open recent apps. A double click of the home button will bring up recent apps.

As for utilizing this function while the screen is off, I'm not sure how well it'll work with a secured lockscreen as you'll have to authenticate first. On an iPhone, since touchID is integrated into the home button, you can wake up the screen, authenticate, go home and open recent apps while not having to remove your finger from the home button.

If you use the Iris scan, you can wake up the screen with a hard press of the home button, unlock with Iris scan, hit home (if you're already at home then recent apps will open) and hit home a third time to open recent apps. I just tried it out myself and can make it work from screen off in about a second.
