UPDATE/Solved; Didn't have to turn on MTP, what happened was that after plugging phone into the PC
s USB port that can charge, the phones battery icon showed that it was charging, some say a message is supposed to appear to ask what you want to do but it never did, I tapped on the charging battery icon and a message appeared saying the following;
Use USB for

  • Charging
    Just charge this device
  • Power supply
    Charge the other connected device
  • File transfers
Transfer files to Windows or Mac (MTP)
  • Photo transfer (PTP)
Transfer photos or files if MTP is not supported (PTP)
  • MIDI
    Use device for MIDI input

I tapped on; File Transfers, and it was only after doing this that the Nexus folder in Windows File Explorer created a; Internal Shared Storage folder so that I could transfer, Music, Video, Docs, etc from PC to N6 on Nougat Beta.

Nexus 6 running Nougat Beta, where is MTP so I cam turn it on?

When I plug into PC, the PC asks what I want to do, So I select open / see files. But no message appears on Phone.

You need to slide the notification panel down, click on USB charging, and then change it to MTP. You can set it to default to MTP once you enable developer options. I have done that and it still defaults to USB charging, so I still have to change it every time I plug it into my computer.

I have a NEXUS 6P running 7.1.1.
I do not have the discussed option menu when I press the battery icon from the swipe down menu. Did this change? Is there another method to access MTP?
TIA

I have the battery icon, however, when I select it I get all sorts of battery info, however, no connection options. BTW I am plugged into my PC and it is charging.

When you plug into a PC you swipe down and there is a notification that will say something like USB charging. Don't hit he battery icon. Instead two the notification and select file transfer.

Thank you. Direct, to the point, missed by the more complicated solutions. This was all I needed, but the other answers assumed this was a given piece of information.

I had the same problem - I realised the computer was charging, there was no notification, but the computer was still asleep - so - make sure the computer is awake when you plug it in - then the option is there

so theres no solution to this? nobody has posted a solution. Its incredible Android has such an established user base when they cant even provide a simple system to use. Ive looked in every setting on my phone and its impossible to change it from charge mode to MTP. Absolutely disgraceful

If the drop-down on the notification bar is not giving you the option to change the connection type, you probably have a hardware problem. The two common problems are (1) the USB cable is damaged or otherwise only supports charging, or (2) the computer's USB port you are using is in a USB hub, which often leads to communication problems with the phone and computer (use a direct USB port instead).

Also check your developer settings. Often times there is an option there to change the default USB connection to MTP instead of "charging".

Which phone?
Which version of android?
Which carrier?

Hi
I have the same problem - I just want to have the same thing happen when I plug my phone into my Windows 10 64 bit PC as happened with my Nexus 4 with Android 5.1.1 - you set the default usb mode once and the phone knows what to do next time.
I now have a Pixel 128GB running Android 8.1. and I have to set the usb mode to MTP every time. I've tried this with 2 different usb ports, cable makes no difference.
Can you help?
Cheers
Dave

Hi
May be this is not the place for this question but I'm kind of hopeless at this point, so I beg your pardon in advance.
I too have a similar problem. When I connect my Galaxy Note Fan Edition (SM-G935F) to any PC with multiple different cables (including the original type C one) by default the phone goes into charging mode and in the notification panel cable charging notification appears and nothing else. When I tap on the cable charging notification the phone sends me directly to the Settings -> Device Maintenance -> Battery menu. Now, If I open the Setting/Developer Options/Usb configuration manually I get the menu the OP wrote and after selecting MTP everything works just fine. I can see everything and edit everything on my phone (internal and sd storage) without issue. My question is (sorry for the long explanation, I am very new to this forum): How can I get the USB Configuration menu to pop up in notifications bar or edit the Cable Charging notification to take me to the USB Configuration menu.
Cheers,
Kane

This wasn't solved. The problem is almost always the choice of usb cable. All do not support MTP and so the option will not appear if you have the wrong one. You are probably using a cable from another non-data device's charger. Just find the original or any that is a smartphone usb cable. The option will then appear automatically.
