Some advice about updating for a newb - what are the issues?

Hi all,

I recently posted a thread about a problem i was having getting videos through the YouTube app. Turns out the fix is to leave the phone at dio1 and not accept the dl09 update.

So, since I use my phone to watch videos, that's what I'll be doing, but here's my question:

What issues will I face by not applying the DL09 update?

I know there is some kind of GPS problem that gets fixed, but I've searched and can't find a description of the problem. Can someone post a link for me? I don't use my phone for Nav (have it in my car) so it's not that big a deal for me, but I'd like to know what the deal is.

Are there any other problems I'm leaving open?

I saw the blurb on the front page about Froyo going to the devs. When (if) froyo is released for the fascinate, will I be able to update to that if I haven't applied the DL09 update?

Thanks in advance for the answers.

Dan

On DI01, a lot of people experienced long lock times for getting a position fix, that's about it. On DJ05 and DL09, the GPS seems to lock on much quicker. But if you don't/rarely use the GPS, you're really not effected negatively without it.

Another thing fixed in DJ05/DL09 is the sidetone while on calls has been reduced. Sidetone is the volume of your own voice, played back through the earpiece. I found it really annoying, but others didn't notice it at all.

Not really, those were the highlights. I don't think there were any security issues to be addressed, or that were addressed.

Once they have it in good shape, they'll release everything you need to update - ROM, kernel and modem likely. You'll be able to flash directly, no need to go through all the interim versions.

di01 sucks. go with dj05. it fixes all the issues dl09 does and it doesnt break your phone. dj05 is a great build, go with that you wont be sorry.

I've had zero problems with DL09, but I've always flashed everything separately - modem.bin, kernel and ROM.

The DL09.tar.md5 I got from xda when it came out is one file, but you can watch Odin go through the 3 steps individually. I have had zero issues with it, but I can't say there's any real advantage over DJ05. I just like having the newest available option I guess. I think the OTA update was more problematic from what I've seen.

Biggest thing I experienced with the new dl09 was my battery started dying twice as fast. I had to go in to Running Applications and shut down a lot of things that had never opened before the update. I installed Juice Defender last night and it seems to have brought it back to life. We will see after a few days of it running.

Your kernel is probably going to be more to blame with that issue. Try testing a few different ones to see which gives you the performance/life you're looking for. Undervolted ones like StupidFast and Adrynalyne's tests are going to help a lot.

Thanks for all the great replies, folks. Especially to Chris3D.

How can I update to DJ05? I would think the only update available by searching for updates is DL09. Can someone point to the right place?

Also, if I'm reading correctly, the DJ05 update fixes the problem with hearing myself too much on a call. Is that correct? That's the only thing that's even semi-annoying, but not a very big deal.

Thanks again.

Here's the thread on XDA with the initial release: [RELEASE] DJ05 rom, kernel, radio - xda-developers

I don't know if there was ever anything specific that DL09 fixed over DJ05, but maybe you won't experience the problems with this that you were with 09.

And yea, I do believe DJ05 fixed the sidetone issue. The link has the modem, Voodoo and non-Voodoo kernels and the stock rom. I believe it's totally stock, odexed and all. But you can use the kernel and modem with any DJ05 rom.

Again, thanks for a great reply. there's just one problem. I don't know how to update these things individually, and I don't want to brick my phone. Is this stuff hard to do? Is there a step-by-step link somewhere? I went to the link you posted and it looks like a great update, and they give links to the parts, but I don't know how to use Odin or clockwork. Do you know a link where I can go to learn about those programs? I'll go look in the stiky's, but if you know better, please post.

Thanks, and sorry for being such a newb.

Go into the fascinate rooting, rom and hack section of the forum. Read up on the stickies at the top.

First time rooting/hacking can be daunting, but just follow directions EXACTLY and you will open up a whole new world of fascinate goodness. Also, flash stuff made ONLY for this phone.

Don't worry too much about bricking, most all can be restored. Most of the vets have bricked multiple times.
