Some D2G issues....

Just picked up the D2G yesterday and it's ok. I'm switching from BBs for 10+ years so I know it'll take a little getting used to.

I've gone through everything on the "Battery Life" thread and I've had this phone unplugged for about 1 hour already and it's already down to 80% left, with me doing nothing. So I'm going to wait and see if the things from the "Battery Life" thread help it out since yesterady on a full charge it did not even last me over 5 hours doing nothing.

My next question is this. I've messed with the screen standby settings to make it go idel after 2 minutes instaed of 1 minute but do not think that would have such a drastic affect on battery life.

The one thing I wanted to know is if there is something wrong with the phone since well, the battery drains so quickly and easily AND the only way that I can wake up the phone is turning it into landscape and opening up the keyboard. Touching any of the buttons and the screen do not do anything.

The other thing that I did notice is that in the same area that i would get 3G and 4 bars or better on my BB, the D2G is in 3G with one bar or drops down to 1x coverage.

Completely kill the battery then let it charge 100%. I did that a day after getting my D2 and it worked wonders.

I went through this issue. Go to battery manager and look at cell standby. If you see time without a signal at 50% turn on airplane mode and then turn it off. This improved both my battery life and wifi connectivity.

I had the same issue and still do, but what I did notice is that the drian from 100 to 90 is very fast. Then 90 to 80 is much longer. Don't know why, but made changes and found a switch that controls the display light. I keep it on the low mode and change it as needed then back to low before holstering.

I also did not notice not much of a change when I went from 1 minute to 2 minutes.

I did see a big change when I drained the battery and then charged it. Also, I use the desktop charger and leave it in the charger all night.

Batter Conservation

I picked up the D2 on launch day and had similar issues. There are a couple things that may help you manage you battery life better.

1. Place the Power Control Widget somewhere on one of you home screens. Easy access to active syn, screen brightness and other features will help you control you battery usage. The screen is the biggest power drain. I leave that on Auto during the day and usually dim it at night.

2. Under Setting>Data Manager>Data Delivery there are data usage settings. Un-checking "Background Data" will put your 3G usage into a "passive" state. Some apps require constant polling (push and pull services) of the network but it is not always necessary. This will prevent every app on your phone from accessing the network without your expressed permission. Even with "Active 3G" off, you can still use apps like Gmail of Facebook without issue. Some apps, though, like Fancy Widget and other weather widgets, can be told to poll anyway despite your network settings and only at set intervals to help extend the life of you battery. Android Market will not run without Background Data enabled. Fortunately when you click it, though, Moto has already created a shortcut to accessing the data menu. Some other services can be affected but it's few and far between.

3. If you aren't going to be using data for an extended period or you know you are in an area where data coverage is spotty, under the same menu you can disable all data while still maintaining phone/text(minus MMS) functionality. Your battery life will be extended like never before if you control your phones data in this and the previously mentioned way.

4. This one is just a personal preference: I usually run the phone on Max Batt Saver unless I intend to use data and other service heavily. If I do intend to use the phone heavily, I use Nighttime Saver. (Settings>Battery Manager>Battery Mode). Max Batt Sav shuts off data services after so many minutes of inactivity but will turn back on when you wake the phone.

Having you phone stay awake for that extra minute will impair your battery life a little but it shouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

As for the phone not waking when you press the ON button: I think that's a MotoBLUR issue. I have had a similar experience with my D2 and have never quite been able to remedy this. Using an alternate Launcher may help you in this area. I now use Launcher Pro and it seems to have helped with some (but definitely not all) of the issues that plague MotoBLUR.

One thing worth noting is that the D2G has the fastest processor(correct me if I'm wrong) of any smartphone on the US market. It would make sense for your batter to drain faster than my D2's battery.

The temperature of your phone does affect battery life. I use Battery Indicator to tell me the approximate percentage of the battery(rounding down form the nearest ten)as well as the temp of the phone. A Hot phone is indicative of heavy processor use which is obviously a culprit in draining the battery but also the phone works harder to cool itself down further draining the battery. Knowing the temperature of the phone when you do what may better help you understand how much battery you are actually consuming when using the phone. There have been a couple instances when I have put my phone in the fridge for a few minutes to help cool it down.

As for spotty data coverage, that may be an antenna issue and possibly(hopefully) VZW/Moto can fix in a future OTA update. Or the unlikely possibility is that you D2G better reflects the actual available data coverage than your BB did. I don't know a whole lot about BB but if I'm not mistaken, doesn't RIM contribute to the data services of its phones? If so, this may explain why your data doesn't seem as consistent.

You might want to also check and see that your phone is up date by going to Settings>About Phone>System Updates. you phone may not have come pre-installed with the most current VZW update. If you took your phone in for any of these issues, that is the first step the service tech would perform.

Good luck... hope this helps!
Oh, and Welcome to Android!!

I tried changing battery settings, then tried to *228 to update roaming. Then eventually I just did two factory resets and loaded a custom rom without blur im now easily making it through a day with juice left.
Edit
And fastest processor no it's just oc from the factory to 1.2 to help with the horrible performance of the d2. And I had my d1-2 up to 1.4

What custom ROM are you using on the D2G? If this really makes THAT much of a difference in battery life then I am there.

I have a d2 not the global but look for fission if they release that for the d2g it will help. Also their is a lock unlock button on the top right of the phone right by the 3.5 jack use that to lock or unlock your phone that will also help

The biggest thing that I have found on extending the battery life is watching the brightness on the screen. I use the Dazzle Configurable Switcher to manually adjust my screen and other settings as needed. It puts multiple toggles in one widget and saves a lot of space on the homescreens. I use it on my DX and D2 and it seems to work well for me. I even keep my battery manager on performance mode and it last the day depending on how much I use the browser.

Yeah the browser is a huge drain especially over cellular connection. Im hoping lte will fix that.

lte is going to do more damage to battery life. more data faster = more battery drain. the best thing we can hope for is extremely efficient tegra 2's or that mythical 25nm dual core Qualcom processor.

I have the extended battery but I have used it from day 1 so it is hard for me to say. Based on what I had read here before I purchased I thought it would be worth it right away. I can't imagine battery life without it even with all my battery usage optimizations.

I don't know wifi is faster but my battery last much longer using it. Well my hope is that it will help though it may turn out to be an evo like situation were its worse than 3g

I am getting a full day with the extended battery and pretty heavy (although NOT constant) use. This is with low screen brightness, Juice Defender and SetCPU. Full synch is on and with the screen off Juice Defender turns on data for 1 minute every 15 minutes but data is on full-time when the screen is on. The battery usage (or at least prediction) seems to be getting better over the last few days. Staring to be a bit happier with the battery life. Oh yeah, I also disabled Live Wallpaper and turned off the system status real-time monitoring (that program seemed to be sucking juice).

...the only way that I can wake up the phone is turning it into landscape and opening up the keyboard. Touching any of the buttons and the screen do not do anything.

There's also a physical button on top near the headphone jack that will wake it up. Because the buttons are capacitive they need power to the screen to use them to wake it up, in sleep mode there is no power.

Also regarding the battery life, my X with a full suite of apps is lucky to last a day. My D2G which is mostly barren now barely uses any juice at all. I think the biggest battery hog on my X is Tweetdeck, it pulls down data all the time. Widgets can also do nasty things to battery life if they're constantly keeping the network connection alive.
